Chapter TenThe following week began with disappointment for the English students. Doctor Rivers was absent from his Realism and the Novel lecture and was instead replaced with Wilomena Smythe, who complained bitterly of being the university stand-in for any absent lecturers.
“Is Dr Rivers okay?” Evelyn asked Juliette, as they prepared for a lecture on the imperfection of marriage through the literature of Middlemarch.
“He's on a course,” Juliette replied, “spending a week at a university up North.” And I'm missing him already, she added silently.
