*Beep* *Beep*
I feel the soft bed beneath me and try to move. I groan in confusion and frustration. Why the heck can I not move? And why do I feel like I have been run through a wood chipper?
Rogues. Leo barely whispers.
Her word brings it back. It wasn’t a dream, or nightmare.
Hunter rejected us. The kind boy I grew up with who turned into some evil person. The Alpha throwing me out, the burn to my pack mark, leaving Gold Moon to seek refuge at Blood moon. Running into Issac and Everett. Issac dying. Issac’s last words to Evertt ‘you are hers now.’ The rogues as we approached the Blood Moon pack.
Am I dead?
I try to open my eyes, but it's no use. Is this hell? Nothing but darkness, not being able to move.
Not. Dead. Leo whispers so low I can barely make out the words. I lay there trying to move and grunting.
I don’t know how long it takes me but I open my eyes. The fluorescent light about blinds me, but eventually I am able to keep my eyes open.
I look around the best I can while not being able to move my head. It looks like I am in a hospital room, which confuses me. Did Blood Moon help me? Why would they do that?
The door creaks open and I see a older man who looks like a doctor come through.
He has thick glasses and silver hair. When his eyes meet mine they widen a bit and he smiles a bit.
“Good morning, Amona. My name is Dr. Lang, I have been taking care of you. How are you feeling?” He asks, stepping closer to me. I try to speak, but all I can manage is a croak out of my barely open mouth.
“It’s okay. Let me get you some water, maybe that will help.” I nod slightly. He comes back a few moments later and helps me sit up and sip the water.
The new position helps wake some of my muscles and I am able to move some.
“Better?” He asks, studying my movements.
“Yes. Thank you.” I whisper. He smiles and nods.
“You had severe tearing on your leg, which needed stitches and the bite to your upper half was unlike anything I have seen. The placement was unusual for a fight with a shifted wolf and with your build was one wrong move away from reaching your heart. I was able to reset the broken bones, which have healed a bit, but not as quickly as we would like.” He explains.
“Y. Yes. Sir. I cannot shift. My. Healing is slower than most.”
“Ah yes. That would explain it. I am sure that your healing is at least twice as long as the normal persons.”
“Yeah. It is.” I confirm and he nods.
“Are you able to explain the unusual placement of the bite to your shoulder area?” He asks and I cringe. He is going to think I am crazy.
“I uh. I dove into the rogue’s mouth as he was.. um . closing it?” He eyes me in confusion.
“You. Willing put yourself into the path of the rogue's bite?” He asks for clarification. I nod.
“Yeah. But not on purpose. Well. It was on purpose, but not for the reason you may be thinking. I mean there really is no sane reason a person would do that. But there is, I. I promise. He was going for Everett and I jumped in the way. See? A completely sane reason.” I ramble. His eyes grow increasingly wide. Emotions ranging from confused to skeptical, then to understanding.
“You sacrifice yourself for the boy. I understand. While reckless, very admirable. And from the sounds of it, you were able to still kill the rogue, while being trashed around like a chew toy. That is fairly impressive. But I would not recommend doing that again. It was very dangerous.”
“I will not promise anything. I will do whatever I will to save any child, no matter the cost.” He shakes his head but doesn’t respond.
He goes into checking me, asking me to move around as he checks my responsiveness and muscle.
During which I ask him how long I have been in here and what happened to Everett. Turns out I’ve been out for a week with my bones approximately half way healed. And most importantly Everett is okay, but he was unable to give me any other information, which was aggravating.
He excused himself after and told me another person would be in shortly to speak with me.
After who knows how long a man walks in with doctor Lang following behind.
The new man is, judging by the typical 7ft doors we have, is just over 6 ft. He has light blonde hair with hard dark hazel eyes. His stature is more bulky with muscle and he has a scar down the side of his face to mid neck. By his aura he is clearly a beta rank.
He eyes me carefully.
“Hi Amona. My name is Gamma Carson. I am in charge of the lone wolf community.” His voice does not match his look at all. It is almost smooth and calming. I look at him in confusion.
“Uh.. Hi?” I ask and almost face palm myself. If this man is the Alpha’s third and the one in charge of me before pack acclimation, he is super important. The last thing I need is to be thrown out for disrespect.
Cringing, I look at my hands, which are twisting together on the sheets nervously.
“I have a few questions that I am hoping you will answer for me.” He says, coming closer to the side of my bed with a note book in his hands. I look up, not making eye contact and nod.
“Of course, Gamma.”
“The boy you brought with you the guards said you called him Everett?” He asks and I nod.
“Yes, Gamma.”
“After speaking with the Alpha he confirmed that he told Eleise that he would grant you sanctuary, but there was no mention of a boy. We called Eleise to confirm and there was confirmation that you did not have a child. So that begs the question, Amona, did you kidnap this child?” He asks bluntly.
I rear back, offended at the accusation. Looking him in his eye, damned the consequences, I grit out the words.
“I did not kidnap him.”
“Then can you please explain how you came into the possession of a child in the approximate two weeks it took you to arrive here?”
I get it and I guess it does look bad, but I didn’t take him. I would never harm a child by doing that unless they were in an abusive family. And even then it would be only once all other avenues have been exhausted.
He is still studying me as I think back to Issac and take a deep breath.
“I. I ran into him and his father, Isaac on the way here. I told them about Blood Moon accepting lone wolves on a trial basis to join the pack and asked them if they wanted to join me. Issac didn’t want to, but for Everett’s sake agreed. Three days before we got here.” My voice starts to tremble and tears threated to spill over. “Issac was leading us and was attacked by two rogues. He killed them, but.. They killed him too. Before he passed he asked me to take care of Everett. I agreed.”
A few tears have escaped and I wipe them as soon as I realized I started crying.
“Do you know which pack they are from?”
“No. Issac never told me. Just said that his mate passed when giving birth to Everett and they kicked him and the new born out because Issac lost control of his wolf when she passed.”
“Do you know their last name?”
“I. I think one time Issac mentioned Willow? But it could have also been his mate’s name. We tried to not speak about the more.. difficult things.”
Gamma Carson doesn’t look as skeptical now, but more empathetic.
“We were informed that you risked your own life for Everett’s. In speaking with your brothers and Elise, we understand that you are a child caregiver and wouldn’t harm a fly unless otherwise provoked. We reserve judgment, but for the time being, Everett would like to see you. He has been quite difficult, understandably so. But we believe that his transition will be better with you instead of one of the families that fosters children.”
I am crying openly now. I can’t believe it. They are going to let Everett stay with me? That is perfect. He will be my boy, my reason, my everything.
