I forced my legs over the edge of the mattress, trying desperately to stand up, but a wave of blinding agony ripped through my entire torso. It felt as though a thousand red-hot needles were being driven directly into my flesh all at once.
"Ouch!" I cried out, the sharp scream shattering the quiet air of the chamber.
The two nurses gasped, leaping forward in a panic to catch my trembling arms before my weak legs could give out beneath me.
