The car jolted to an abrupt standstill, the sudden force throwing me forward so hard my forehead nearly slammed into the front dashboard. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, panic rising in my throat as confusion swept over me. Why had we screeched to a halt in the middle of this pitch-black, deserted stretch of highway? I watched Damon leap out of the driver's side in a single fluid movement, his body tense and ready for a fight.
