Kira's POV
I grinned softly as I breathed in the air of the wealthier part of the city. While I felt bad for all those in the slums, I was one who was used to the pampered life. I did make sure that I knew how survive if one day something did happen though. I loved going clothes shopping in some of the expensive stores down here, but today wasn't for shopping. No I needed someone to accompany me to the tavern on Friday.
Since everyone in Reign was pretty superstitious about Friday the 13th. I only knew of one person I might be able to convince. That would be my sister Keirstan Hathoway. She was 4 years younger than me, and yet life had worked out better for her in some ways. She had a five year old son, my nephew, Adrian. He was just the sweetest and she was so lucky! While Adrian's biological father wasn't in the picture I'd heard through the grapevine (my parents) that she had a new boyfriend. I wouldn't give him the sister seal of approval until I saw how he treated Adrian and her.
When it comes to the laws of my tribe, The Dark Moon, we're a little more on the conservative side of things. If you bear a child out of wedlock most likely you'll be excommunicated. It took over two years of fighting for me to convince them not to excommunicate Keirstan when Adrian was born. Even my parents no longer looked at her the same while they still loved her I have a feeling they would always blame her for falling out with some of the tribe members. I also have a feeling if I didn't work for Astefan, Keirstan would've been excommunicated. I was still surprised when she chose to live in Lusnayin instead of moving somewhere where people wouldn't look down upon her. I could only wonder what had caused her to prolong her visit to the capitol these past couple of weeks. Not that I was complaining I couldn't wait to see Adrian and Keirstan.
I arrived in 15 minutes at the Rubayin hotel plaza. It was a tall 15 story marbled building, with rubies crafted into it. Gaudy if you ask me, but true in the style of those who live in Reign. According to Keirstan's text she was on the fourteenth floor in the Sapphire Suite. I made my way inside the building, forgoing the front desk since I had an room number. I approached the elevator, thank god it was empty, made my way inside, and hit the button for the fourteenth floor.
Ding!
I immediately exited the elevator only to run right into someone "s**t!" I yelped pulling back. "I'm so sorry" I murmured turning to look up at the man. A green haired man looked back at me, he had dark brownish-black eyes and he just chuckled softly.
"It's no problem I should've been paying attention to where I was going" He said. I couldn't help but think that I've seen this man somewhere before.
"Do you usually stare at people for 3 hours?" He said causing me to blush furiously.
"I'm so sorry! I thought I recognized you from somewhere, and I must've let my mind wander!" I was absolutely mortified. I had never zoned out staring at people before!
"It's no problem," he said with a grin, "but I don't think we've had the pleasure of meeting before."
"Probably not. I'm just out of it today" I said rubbing a hand on my face.
"It's alright" He said with a grin giving me a sense of deja vu. Why the hell did he look so familiar?!
"Alright well I have to get going nice meeting you" I said eager to get out of this conversation. With this man I could swear I knew from somewhere. It didn't help that he also gave me a feeling of unease.
"Nice meeting you too" He send immediately turning and walking towards the elevator. He then pulled his phone out and started texting furiously.
"Rude" I thought huffing slightly. Well I guess it didn't really matter because I wasn't the nicest during that conversation either. I just turned and began making my way towards the Sapphire Suite.
Knock Knock!
I tapped my foot urgently while waiting for a reply. The door itself to the Sapphire Suite, was, you guessed it inlaid with sapphires.
"Just a second!" A gruff voice yelled from inside. I groaned inwardly guessing that must've been my sister's new boyfriend. I wasn't really looking forward to meeting him. The last boyfriend my sister had, had been Adrian's birth father. He denied ever getting my sister pregnant so he didn't have to marry her. Turns out he'd been having affairs behind her back. Oh trust me he had gotten what was coming to him, some broken bones, some scars, and maybe a permanent limp. I had had a lot of fun with that man.
The door opened up and a golden skinned man stood there. He was taller than me, (then again who wasn't?) He had caramel brown eyes, and blonde hair. I just looked him up and down with a look of pessimism, and he glared at me doing the same.
"Can I help you?" He asked with a displeased expression. I just huffed a laugh. I wondered if Keirstan had warned him about me. If she had he was in for a storm pretty soon.
"You must be Isaac. I'm Kira, Keirstan's big sister." I said with a smug smirk, crossing my arms over my chest. He just blew out a breath, the only sign of his nervousness.
"Nice to meet you Kira" He said gruffly just staring me down. I had to admit this man had some balls. Oh well if he didn't treat Keirstan or Adrian right he sure as hell wouldn't have them for long.
"I'm assuming you're here to see Keirstan?" He asked just a hint of politeness creeping into his tone. At least he seemed well mannered. Or at least I hoped he was sweeter around Keirstan.
"I am. Is she home?" I asked. I could only hope Adri was here too. I absolutely loved my little nephew and I hardly got to see him. So this would be a real treat if he was home.
"She is, and so is Adrian" He added at the end as if it was an afterthought. And damn my face, but I knew I was wearing a wide grin right now. I couldn't wait to see them.
"If you guys aren't busy I'd like to see them?" I decided on going with you guys to make Isaac feel more at ease. I knew we needed to work on getting along. For Keirstan's sake at least.
"Of course they're just watching a movie in the den, follow me" He turned holding the door open just enough for me to slip inside. The interior was even more gaudy than the exterior, but Alexander did like to flaunt his wealth, and this was his favorite hotel in all of Dorlonia.
Eventually we arrived in a den that was styled in cream and gold. The curtains were a creamy satin that were pulled shut in order to create darkness for the movie. I saw two figures curled up against each other on a long couch. A taller woman and a small little child. I grinned to myself immediately knowing that it was Keirstan and Adrian.
"Can you get the lights?" I whispered to Isaac conspiratorially. He just nodded with a slight grin before walking over the the curtains. He pulled them open with a swish causing groans from the mother/son duo on the couch. Keirstan sat up and glared at Isaac. Her blonde bob hung around her face with ease, blue eyes shining with a fierce yet simple anger. She got more of our mother's looks than myself, who looks like our father.
"Really that was the best part!" She said in exasperation.
"Yeah Daddy!" A little boy popped his head over the top of the couch. Isaac flushed as I looked at him with a glare that could kill. When did Adrian get close enough to call him a father? Adrian had ashy brown hair and pale skin from his father, but he did have Keirstan's blue eyes. The only thing she had gotten from our father. I decided to chime in at this point. After all I was here for Keirstan and Adrian not to start family drama.
"Really aren't I more important than the movie?" I said pretending to be sad. Keirstan whipped her head around towards me with a huge grin on her face. Adrian look towards me with a gasp, his whole face lit up as he took me in.
"Auntie Kira!" he shrieked as he vaulted over the couch and ran towards me.
"Hey little buddy" I said as I picked him up in a hug, and swung him around in my arms. He burrowed his tiny head in my neck as Keirstan drug herself off the couch and walked towards me. I set Adrian down and engulfed my sister in a huge hug.
"I missed you Kira" she sighed softly, I only pulled her closer.I was not quite one for the mushy gushy stuff, but Keirstan already knew that, so she understood that this hug meant something huge. She looked at me with a wry grin, an expression that could mirror my own at times.
"Well well big sister I wondered when you were going to wander in " Keirstan said.
"I've been waiting for the right moment I guess" I said with a shrug. I looked over and noticed Adrian and Isaac talking animatedly. Perhaps he was a good addition to this family.
"Kira!" Keirstan said with a frown, "What did you do to your wrist?" She said picking up my wrapped left wrist, and looking at it with a scrutinizing glare. I sighed inwardly Keirstan knew what I truly did for a living, and as I looked at her I tried to convey her my original message. Her eyes widened as she seemed to understand what I truly came here for.
"Hey Isaac?" Keirstan said turning to him with a finger at her chin. He looked up and so did Adrian. Isaac tilted his chin to show he was listening to Keirstan.
"Would you take Adri to the park please. I'd like to have a word with my sister" Keirstan said with a shrug.
"Sure," Isaac said before turning to Adrian, "You wanna go to the park little dude"
"Yes!" Adrian squealed before running to get his shoes.
"Thank you baby" Keirstan said giving Isaac a peck on the lips. Isaac just smiled, genuinely I might add, before kissing her forehead. Adrian came running back out with tennis shoes and an adorable red sweatshirt on.
"Can we play later Auntie?" He asked me with the cutest little puppy dog eyes I've ever seen. I melted at that point, not that I hadn't been planning on staying in the first place.
"Of course buddy! And then how about you and I go out for dinner tonight. While mommy and daddy run some errands" I said with a suggestive wink at Keirstan and Isaac. Both flushed furiously while Adrian just jumped up and down.
"Yeah! Can we go to Auburito's!?" He squealed and I just chuckled. It was one of the cheesiest, corniest, and goofiest family restaurants around.
"We can go wherever you want little buddy." I finished to where Isaac came up behind Adrian and swung him over his shoulder. Adrian just squealed.
"And to the park we're off!" Isaac yelled running out with Adrian still giggling. I looked after them with a downcast expression. I could only hope that if I had to bear children for Joshua that he would be a good father. Keirstan just sighed as if she understood what I was thinking.
"I'll get us some tea and then we can talk" She said before disappearing into the kitchen.
15 Minutes Later
"Soooooo" I said sipping the earl grey Keirstan had set in my hand seconds earlier. We had taken a seat on the cream colored couch, and were about to probably discuss many different things.
"Adrian seems to adore Isaac" I said trying to break the ice a little. A couple different emotions flitted across Keirstan's face in that moment. She knew I would be hard on Isaac after what happened the first time. She knew I would be that overprotective Aunt that would scrutinize every father figure put before Adrian.
"Isaac's a good man," she sighed at last before looking at me desperately, "and I really, really like him Kira!" I just shot her a look that said You know how that turned out last time. I saw hurt fly across her face and I felt terrible. This had always been a tough subject for her.
"And if you're curious Adrian started calling him Dad on his own. Both Isaac and I were shocked when he came into the kitchen one morning and said Morning Mommy! Morning Daddy!" She said trying to defend herself.
"It's not that Keir and you know it, " I said sighing before turning on my inner motherly tone, "I just want what's best for my baby sister, and my only nephew." She just nodded sipping her tea and watching me.
"If you say Isaac's a good man than I believe you, I trust you Keirstan, and Adrian seems to adore him." I said with a smile. Keirstan just got this far off smile on her face obviously thinking about past memories.
"Also he hasn't done anything to make me hate him. I can't stereotype him just because of what happened in the past." I finished with a shrug.
"Actually knowing you. You definitely could" Keirstan said giving me a knowing look before we both burst into laughter. We just sighed before drinking more of our tea.
"Sooo now that I'm done letting change the subject," Keirstan said in a singsong voice making me gulp slightly, "What happened to your wrist?" I just studied her thinking about how I wanted to answer this, and in the end I ended up telling her to whole story of what happened in the warehouse the night of Jaconis's betrayal, when Joshua and I had been attacked, and Black Eyes and his crew. She just watched wide-eyed, shaking her head slightly.
"So King Alexander wants you to hunt down the Morei brothers!?" She said with a mixture of shock, and horror. I just nodded taking another sip of the earl grey. She shook her head with a breathless, horrified laugh.
"And how Kira are you planning on doing that?" She said disbelievingly. I giggled slightly knowing I'd had that exact expression on my face when Joshua and I had first went over this.
"Well to be honest we really need to catch a higher society Demon and take him in for questioning" I said informatively.
"You mean torture. No need to be all sweet talk around me Sis" Keirstan said lounging back against one of the pillows. I laughed, Keirstan's attitude was one of the things I loved the most about her.
"Yes torture" I finished with a maniacal grin.
"And just how do you plan on doing that?" Keirstan said point a finger towards me. I blanched knowing what I was going to ask her was dangerous.
"Well actually," I said awkwardly, "that might be the reason I'm here"
"Kiiiiiiirrrrrraaaaaaaaaaa........" Keirstan groaned flopping all the way down on the couch to where her feet were laying in my lap.
"No seriously hear me out it involves alcohol" I said rubbing my fingers together. Keirstan and I used to have the most fun going out for drinks with each other. I knew if anything that might get her attention.
"I listening" She said waving her hand with a flourish causing us both to laugh. I then proceeded to tell her about my trip to the tavern and Friday the 13th.
"So let me get this straight," She said sitting up again, "You want me to go with you to a tavern to track down a Demon dude."
"Male" I corrected with a cough. She just shot me a withering glare, I just giggled.
"A Demon Male on Friday the 13th. Coincidentally the second most dangerous night of the year" She said crossing her arms giving me an unimpressed glare.
"Exactly!" I crooned, clapping my hands together. She just rolled her eyes as I gave her my best imitation of Adrian's puppy dog eyes. She snorted before rolling her eyes playfully again.
"Fine......." She sighed causing me to shriek, jump up, and do a little victory dance. She busted, laughing so hard I thought she might just pee her pants.
"And that's why your my favorite sister" I crooned to her smiling.
"Kira I'm your only sister" She said with a tired look as she shot me a glare once again.
I thought about how tonight would go, how I'd spend time with Adrian. How I needed to get to know Isaac better. In the end I just gave her a smirk as I began planning in my head how Friday would go down. No matter what happened that night I wouldn't let anything happen to Keirstan. Adrian needed his mother to come back in one piece. And it was my job to make sure it happened.
No matter what may happen to me in the end.
