Chapter 5: A Different Kind of Harmony

518 Words
Luna sat at the grand piano the next day, determined to regain control. She had spent the entire night analyzing the score, marking every detail, trying to figure out a way to force Jace to stick to the plan. Their duet wasn’t a competition. It was a carefully composed piece that required structure and balance. But when Jace Ryder strolled into the music hall, guitar slung over his back, and it was clear he had zero intention of following any plan. “Ready for round two, princess?” he teased, dropping into his chair with a lazy grin. Luna ignored the nickname and straightened her sheet music. “We’re going to run through the song properly today.” Jace smirked, tuning his guitar. “Define ‘properly.’” Luna narrowed her eyes. “Without your unnecessary improvisations.” Jace let out a dramatic sigh. “Man, you really hate having fun, don’t you?” Luna didn’t take the bait. “Focus, Ryder.” Jace exhaled, stretching his fingers over the fretboard. “Fine. But if I die of boredom, it’s on you.” Luna took a deep breath and started playing. The opening melody flowed flawlessly, each note crisp and intentional. This time, Jace actually followed, at least at first. His guitar blended in softly, accompanying the piano without overpowering it. For a moment, Luna thought maybe, just maybe, he had finally understood the need for precision. Then— He changed the rhythm. Not as drastically as before, but enough for Luna to feel the shift. She shot him a glare. “Jace.” “Relax,” he murmured, eyes still on his guitar. “Just go with it.” Luna clenched her jaw but forced herself to adapt. She adjusted her tempo slightly, bringing the piano into alignment with his subtle changes. And to her surprise… It worked. The music didn’t fall apart. It evolved. Jace’s adjustments weren’t completely reckless this time. His strumming added depth to the melody, making the piece warmer, more alive. For the first time, Luna wasn’t just playing the notes. She was reacting to the music. By the time they reached the final note, Luna’s fingers hovered over the keys, heartbeat unsteady. The room was silent, the lingering echo of their music hanging between them. Jace exhaled, rolling his shoulders. “Well, damn.” Luna swallowed, her thoughts tangled. She wasn’t supposed to like it. But she had. She really had. Jace turned to her, smirking. “Told you rules were meant to be broken.” Luna straightened, forcing her expression back to neutrality. “That wasn’t breaking the rules. That was controlled adaptation.” Jace laughed. “That’s just a fancy way of saying you liked it.” Luna refused to dignify that with a response. Instead, she stood, gathering her sheet music. “Same time tomorrow.” Jace watched her, amusement flickering in his eyes. “Whatever you say, princess.” Luna walked toward the door, her heart still pounding from the music. For the first time, their duet hadn’t felt like a battle. It had felt like something real.
