“Is that you, Adam?” He trudged up the stairs to the third-floor apartment where his mother resided alone at the Grace Court brownstone. He had converted most of the rooms to a medical facility, where he split his time in the basement conducting his research. Her spacious, well-furnished bedroom was the only area that still resembled living quarters. “Yes. Mother, I’ll be right in.” He walked over to the window and stared out at the breathtaking view of the New York skyline across the East River.
