At that moment, the NYPD were in pursuit of a vehicle roaring down Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive at eighty miles an hour. The car finally pulled off at Exit 5 along Houston Street. An officer emerged from the passenger side of the patrol car and ordered the driver to open the window and show his hands. They were astounded to find Jerome Browne at the wheel, whiskey fumes assailing the officer’s nostrils. “Mr. Browne.” The officer routinely asked for his license and proof of insurance, even though he recognized the NBA star. “Have you been drinking tonight?” “Hell, no!” Jerome was belligerent.
