“Where had she gone? I left her in this room.” The warriors’ voices echoed through the marble corridors of the Top Rank Hotel, the elite packs’ most luxurious territory.
Footsteps thundered on the marble as they dispatched themselves in search of me.
I ran from the suite where I had been ordered to wait for the Alpha King the moment I overheard their plans.
Ever since I agreed to become the Alpha King’s bed warmer, the restrictions on me as a lowly servant were reduced and a few minutes before I was taken to the top-ranked hotel, I stumbled into the family of three conversing.
“Fool! Did she truly believe we’d waste the pack's money on a dying human?” I heard Christy’s voice and my heart skipped.
“The audacity of her to want you to use the pack's money on that w***e, a lowly human blood.” Angelina scoffed, disgust evident in her voice.
“A lowly slave wants to share a father with me…arghh! Can’t wait for her to die. That stain needs to be removed.” Christy added.
“Not too fast, once the plan is in motion and she bed-warms the alpha king. You secure your place as the Luna of the moon pack.” Alpha Charles paused for a moment.
“She and her mother will be removed.” He said coldly and at the same time, I took a step back upon hearing that, my mind buzzing repeatedly with their words.
“I can’t wait for that, I’m tired of having the other elite pack mock me for having a lowly human slave as a sister,” Christy said with bitterness.
“Just focus and do what you have to do, your father and I will handle the rest,” Angelina said to her daughter.
Recalling that, I tightened my grip on the hem of my dress as my fingers trembled, my heartbeat thundered as panic tightened my chest. “Since my mother and I are going to die. I’m not becoming the bed warmer!” I said, fuming. Hiding in the dark part of the corridor.
Just as I thought that the warriors were gone and had stood up to leave, one of the warriors yelled. “She’s right there! Get her!” I widened my eyes and without waiting, I ran.
I barely know my way around here as a servant, a lowly human blood at that. I was never meant to cross paths with luxury or smell what it looks like. Except for tonight, where I have the value to serve my life on a platter for my father’s daughter.
‘Not happening!’ I said internally and continued running. Panting heavily as I was about to lose my breath.
“Bang!” I crashed into a solid chest and bounced back almost staggering to the floor.
His strong hands instantly grabbed my arm and pulled me closer to him and the moment his hand touched me, an unfamiliar warmth spread through my chest, instinct urging me to bow, though I didn’t understand why.
Our eyes locked and in that moment it felt like the world around us paused.
A sharp breath tore from my lungs as panic clawed at my chest.
“Please hide me. They’ll kill me.” I said without thinking, quivering, heart drumming like it was about to explode.
His eyes shifted, a glint flashing through them like he was uncomfortable, “Who would dare kill you here?”
Just as he asked the voices grew closer behind me, at this point my eyes were full of mist and unshed tears, staring at the man with pleading eyes as whatever decision he made now, determined my survival.
Suddenly, the warriors froze and at the same time, the air felt heavier and suffocating even the corridor seemed to hold its breath around him.
‘Something felt off.’
“Thud! Thud!” The sound of knees dropping to the floor filled the cold air, followed by their greetings. “Your majesty.” Their voices echoed in unison, cutting through my hearing like a blade.
‘Your majesty? Like the alpha king?’
My breath faltered as I slowly lifted my gaze to the man holding me and froze as cold chills washed over my body like I was drenched with a bucket of ice.
At this point, I don’t know whether to run or to stay as I was in the hands of the predator I was running away from.
‘If I run, they will catch me immediately and if I stay I’d suffer the same fate as when I ran.’ I let out a deep sigh.
‘Goddess, is this my doom? Why me?’
I was still contemplating what to do next, if fate had delivered me to the Alpha King himself, then I would use him.
If at all, I would expose the Pearl pack of presenting a fake, a substitute bed warmer to deceive the alpha king.
“What are y’all running around for?” Their alpha king's beta, Maximus, asked his voice cold and distant just like the temperament of his alpha.
At the same time, the warriors all stood to their feet.
“We’re from Pearl pack delivering the bed warmer to the alpha king.” The leader of the warriors said, hinting at me with his eyes, at the piece of offering from Pearl's pack.
The atmosphere became rigid and unfriendly, his hold became cold and stiff.
I felt uncomfortable and took a step away from him, standing not far away from him.
“She stays with me.” He said his voice cutting through the haze cold precision that makes people want to run.
“Please don’t kill me, I still have a sick mother to tend to.” I blurted out, shaking.
He stared at me, something unreadable flickered in his gaze, at the same time, the warriors hesitated, afraid that I would spill the beans, but with one glare from the beta, they bowed curtly and stormed off.
The corridor fell silent once the warriors disappeared, highlighting only him and me in the background.
His gaze lingered, sharp and assessing, as if he could see through every lie I carried.
He stepped closer and I retreated instinctively.
“Please…” my voice trembled. “I’m only a substitute.”
