Ignored

The night was bitterly cold when I knelt before the Alpha’s quarters, wind clawed through my thin clothes, biting into my skin, yet I did not move. I could not afford to. Behind those towering doors lived the only man who could save my mother, my father, the alpha of Pearl pack, small but part of the elite pack. “Alpha Charles…” My voice trembled as I bowed my head lower. “My mother and I have served the Pearl Pack faithfully for years. Please…have mercy.” The words left my lips again and again until I lost count and my lips tasted like blood. Yet, no answer came, just cold silence and the sound of the servants walking past carrying lanterns and baskets, pretending not to hear me. Some glanced at me with pity before quickly looking away, afraid that even sympathy toward me might invite punishment. The Alpha’s residence remained silent, however, inside those walls, decisions that shaped the pack were made. Outside, I was nothing but a mere taint kneeling in front of the alpha's quarters. My hands tightened against the stone floor, ignoring my sore knee. Mother was dying and the healer had demanded payment for surgery and medicine. Yet, when I counted my savings earlier that evening, my heart shattered—years of labor had barely gathered enough coins to fill my palm. So I came here, for the first time in my life, I dared to beg the man whose blood ran through my veins. “For the sake of the bond between father and daughter,” I cried, my voice breaking, “please save her!” The forbidden words echoed through the courtyard, calling the Alpha ‘father’ was taboo. Yet, desperation crushed fear, already determined that I would not leave without seeing him. Moments later, the doors creaked open and at the same time, the Beta stepped out. His gaze landed on me, filled instantly with disgust. He shook his head as though looking at filth before turning away. Upon sighting the open door, something inside me snapped and before courage could abandon me, I lunged toward the half-open door and forced my way inside. I barely crossed the threshold before pain exploded across my scalp as hands grabbed me. A slap cracked across my face, followed by a kick that struck my stomach, stealing the air from my lungs. “Let me go!” I gasped. “I need to see the Alpha!” My cries drowned beneath boots and fists. In a split second, I was dragged across the polished floor like discarded trash. Blow after blow rained down until pain became distant, and unreal. Still, I crawled forward, I had to reach him. I had to save Mother. “I won’t leave…” I whispered through blood-filled lips. Meanwhile, my resistance only angered the warriors further as my head slammed against the ground. Stars burst across my vision as another kick crushed against my ribs. This time, sound faded into a dull ringing and my body curled instinctively, protecting itself as warmth spread beneath me. Blood and tears blurred my sight as I shook from pain. “Mum…” I whispered weakly. “I tried.” As I spoke darkness crept closer. “If there’s another life, let us be strong wolves, not helpless humans.” Saying that, my vision dimmed and right before I passed out, I saw them standing in the shadows. Alpha Charles, beside him stood Luna Angelina and her daughter, Christy. They watched silently with a neutral face; no anger or mercy. Only cold amusement and excitement. Understanding struck me harder than the beating, to them, this was entertainment. “Goddess…” I prayed silently as consciousness slipped away. “If I live again, give me the strength to make them pay.” Saying that, I jerked and darkness swallowed me whole. On the other hand, I awoke to the sharp scent of disinfectant, white walls surrounded me and for a fleeting moment, I wondered if I had died. Suddenly, the door slammed open. I flinched as a bundle of clothing hit my chest. “Get dressed.” Luna Angelina stood at the foot of the bed, eyes filled with disdain. “You will warm the bed of the Alpha King tonight,” she said calmly. “It is necessary to protect your sister, she’s the mate of alpha Blaine the richest elite alpha, and can’t afford to be a bed warmer.” Hearing that, my heart stopped. “What?” I sat upright. “No!” I hadn’t even finished speaking when her slap came instantly, snapping my head sideways. I clenched my fists beneath the blanket, swallowing my protest. “Not the face, Mother,” Christy said sharply from behind her. “She’s only alive because she looks like me.” She folded her arms, clearly irritated. “I refuse to go to that monster. Every she-wolf sent to him dies. Let the bastard take my place.” She affirmed and her words were clear, the meaning well understood as it settled over me like ice. I was never saved, but preserved to become a substitute sacrifice. My eyes stung as memories of my mother’s story flooded back. How the Alpha had used her nineteen years ago, how the Luna punished her for a sin she never committed. ‘History was repeating itself, only now, I was the offering..’ I uttered, a mock smile simmered in my heart. Angelina’s lips curved slightly. “Your father spent considerable power keeping you alive,” she said. “You will repay that debt tonight.” The realization burned in my chest really hard, what was I expecting? I was never acknowledged by him or treated well, isn’t this normal? For him to save me only to sell me? Fool! When had he ever chosen you? Amy, it’s useless and the truth has always been before your eyes. I heaved softly and remained calm. “If you refuse,” the Luna added softly, leaning closer, “forget about your mother’s surgery.” My breath hitched upon hearing that and at the same time, a warrior stepped forward at her signal. At that moment, I lowered my gaze. “I understand.” A satisfied smile appeared on her face. “That’s better. A w***e’s daughter should know her purpose.” She lifted my chin with one finger. “You have one hour before you are sent to the Alpha King.” The door closed behind them and silence returned. Yet, my hands trembled as I stared at the unfamiliar clothes. Fear, rage, and despair all tangled inside me. ‘Goddess…Is this how my mother’s story began too?’ With a shaky breath, I shuddered at the thought of having just one hour before I was sent to the Alpha King. The man whose bed no woman survived.
