Chapter 3: The Investigation Begins

1007 Words
Jessa and David spent the next few days holed up in the safe house, trying to gather as much information as they could about the mysterious building and the men who had tried to kill David. They spent hours pouring over maps, looking for anything that might give them a clue as to what was going on. It was slow going, and David was starting to get restless. He wasn't used to sitting around doing nothing all day. But Jessa seemed to have an endless reserve of patience. She was methodical and thorough, carefully examining every detail and weighing every possibility. Finally, after several days of work, they had a breakthrough. Jessa had discovered that the building where David had been held was owned by a company called Enigma Corp. According to their website, they were a "security and intelligence firm" that provided "high-tech solutions to complex problems." Jessa's eyebrows had gone up when she read that. "That sounds suspiciously vague," she said. David had to agree. He had a feeling that Enigma Corp was not exactly what it appeared to be. But the question was, what were they really up to? And why did they want to keep it such a secret? Jessa had a theory. "I think they're conducting some kind of illegal experiment," she said. "Maybe they're testing some kind of new technology or weapon." David felt a shiver go down his spine. The idea of being caught up in something like that was terrifying. But he also felt a sense of excitement. They were getting closer to the truth. The next step, Jessa said, was to try and get inside the Enigma Corp building and see what they could find out. But that was going to be a lot harder than just looking up information online. The building was heavily guarded, with security cameras and armed guards at every entrance. Jessa had a plan, though. "We're going to need some help," she said. "I know someone who might be able to get us in." David raised an eyebrow. "Who?" Jessa smiled mysteriously. "Someone I used to work with. He's a bit of a wild card, but he knows how to get things done." David wasn't sure he liked the sound of that. But he also knew that they didn't have a lot of other options. The next day, they met up with Jessa's contact, a man named Marcus. He was tall and muscular, with a shaved head and a perpetual scowl on his face. "Who's the kid?" he asked, eyeing David suspiciously. Jessa introduced them, and Marcus grunted in acknowledgement. "Alright, let's get down to business," he said. "What do you need?" Jessa explained their situation, and Marcus listened carefully. When she was finished, he nodded thoughtfully. "I can get you inside," he said. "But it's not going to be easy. We're going to need to create a distraction to draw the guards away from the entrance." David felt a knot form in his stomach. He wasn't sure he was ready for something like that. But he also knew that they didn't have a choice. The plan was set for that night. Jessa and David would stay behind and monitor the security cameras, while Marcus created the distraction. They would meet up inside the building and try to find any evidence they could. David tried to keep himself busy during the day, but he was on edge. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to go wrong. When night fell, they set out for the Enigma Corp building. Marcus led the way, moving with a catlike grace despite his bulky frame. David tried to keep up, but he felt like he was stumbling in the dark. When they arrived at the building, Marcus disappeared into the shadows while Jessa and David hunkered down behind a nearby dumpster. David's heart was pounding in his chest as they watched the security cameras. They could see guards patrolling the perimeter, their rifles slung over their shoulders. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion. David jumped, his heart in his throat. He turned to look at Jessa, but she was already on her feet, sprinting towards the entrance. David followed her, his heart pounding in his chest. He could hear shouting and gunfire in the distance. Jessa led him through a side entrance and into a dimly lit hallway. "Come on," she said, grabbing his arm. "We don't have much time." They crept down the hallway, keeping to the shadows. David's heart was racing, and he was trying to stay calm. They had to find some evidence, something that would prove what Enigma Corp was really up to. They passed several doors, but they were all locked. David felt a growing sense of desperation. What if they didn't find anything? Finally, they came to a door that was slightly ajar. Jessa pushed it open and they slipped inside. The room was dark, but they could see the flicker of computer screens in the corner. Jessa crossed the room and began to examine the files on the computer. David felt like his heart was going to beat out of his chest. He was terrified that they were going to get caught. Suddenly, the door burst open and a group of armed guards stormed in. David froze, his mind racing. They were trapped. Jessa didn't hesitate. She sprang into action, taking down two guards with lightning-fast strikes. David followed her lead, taking out another guard with a punch to the face. They were outnumbered, but they were determined. They fought with everything they had, dodging bullets and throwing punches. It was a blur of motion and adrenaline. Finally, the last guard fell to the ground, unconscious. Jessa and David stood panting in the middle of the room, their hearts pounding. "We did it," Jessa said, a wild grin on her face. David felt a sense of relief wash over him. They had found what they were looking for. Now all they had to do was get out alive.
