(Flint)
I go to my family home after leaving the Crest to tell Chance the news, and to ensure my mother that I have not gone completely mad with rage.
After scanning the driveway to make sure Slate wasn’t home, I type in the PIN code and head upstairs to the living room.
With a curtesy knock, I enter. “Mom? I’m here!” I call out and find Chance sprawled in the couch watching a lame reality show, stuffing Oreos into her mouth. All she does is eat junk, but she stays a skinny little thing, the only bulk to her is muscle. Chance is tiny but she trains hard and is faster than even me. Her legs would carry her to Illinois no problem if we didn’t want to take a jet.
Jade and our mother sit at the table, various witchcraft ingredient’s strewn out around them while a small spell book levitates between the two witches. Jade didn’t inherit a wolf, instead she’s a pure witch, like Mom. Most hybrids don’t get both of their parents abilities, it’s usually one or the other. For some odd reason, I’m the lucky guy that got both.
The second mom sees me she jumps up, the book plopping down on the table with an “umpfh.”
“Flint! Oh gosh you had me worried sick.” She embraces me with a tight and uncomfortable hug. “You can’t just leave me like that. You know I have an unhealthy obsession with all my children.”
Oh she’s not gonna like this. Drago laughs.
“Actually Mom, I came here to tell you that I’m safe and everything. But also, that I have a business trip I have to make and won’t be back until around August.”
Mom pauses, and I wait for some emotional response but she just stands there, one arm on my shoulder as if she’s broken.
“Lucky bastard! I wanna go on vacation.” Chance grumbles from the couch, spewing dark crumbs all over the back of the couch.
“Garnet Chance Kingston. Watch your mouth.” Mom snaps out of her daze, redirecting her focus back onto me. “Are you really going to be gone for that long? Can.. can I ask you about Slate and Kaylee first? Because Flint look-“ she places her hands on my chest- “I know what they did wasn’t right, but he’s still your brother, and she’s still-“
I push her hands away. “I’m not ready to talk about that yet, okay? I’ll make a decision about that when I get back.” I turn to Chance. “I’m glad you’re so enthusiastic about the trip because you’re going with me. I need a right hand, and against my better judgment; I think you’d be really good at it.”
She tosses the cookies onto the table and jumps to her knees, leaning over the back of the couch. “Holy s**t, are you serious! Let me go pack!” Hurdling over the couch she scampers towards the stairs.
“Garnet Chance, I said watch your mouth!” Mom shouts after her, but it no doubt falls on deaf ears. Pinching her brows, Mom seems extremely stressed. “Flint, are you sure about this? She’s just turned 18 a few months ago. We both know how Chance can get when she’s excited and I just don’t want anything to happen while you’re down there.”
I side hug her. “Chance can handle more than you know. I think it’s time we all stop underestimating her. Besides, she never gets to go anywhere, let me take her to some new parts of the world. I promise I’ll take care of her, alright?”
Thundering footsteps rain as Chance reappears, breathless with excitement. “What should I pack? Where are we going?”
“We’re going to Darling, Illinois.”
Chance’s excitement visibly drops. “Illinois? Why not just take me to fuckin Idaho?” She groans and I can feel my mother’s irritation.
“Chancie, you gotta watch your mouth before Mom blows her top. If you’d rather stay here I’m sure I could find a replacement.” I suggest sarcastically.
She throws up her hers and shakes them vigorously. “No, no it’s fine. Slap my knee and call me Sally! We’re goin to Darlin’.” She mocks a thick country accent and juts out her jaw.
Oh god, she’s going to get us killed out there.
