HANNAH ~
We step off the curb together and fall into an easy pace down the campus sidewalk. The afternoon is warmer than it looks from the window. Summer session kids cut across the quad. A bike bell rings somewhere behind us. Off campus, traffic moves in a steady stream, someone honks two blocks over, and the air smells like hot pavement and someone’s late lunch.
Nate walks with his hands in the pockets of his hoodie, backpack slung over one shoulder. He doesn’t fill the silence right away. I like that about him already.
“So,” he says after half a block. “You just decided to bail on the permission slip thing.”
