CHAPTER 4:THE LOVE THAT DEFIED ALL

730 Words
The college campus buzzed with life as students hurried between classes, their laughter and chatter filling the air. William Oscar Jr., a tall, determined 19-year-old, leaned casually against a tree, his eyes scanning the crowd. His heart lifted as he spotted Jessica, her radiant smile shining as she made her way toward him. “Hey, Jess! You made it!” he called, grinning widely. Jessica, 18 and full of life, rolled her eyes playfully. “Of course! Did you think I’d miss our study session?” They settled onto the grass, the sun casting a warm glow around them. As the hum of campus life buzzed around them, William reached for her hand, holding it gently. With her, he felt at peace, like he’d found something worth all the chaos and pressure he was under. “I really enjoy spending time with you,” he said, his voice soft yet sincere. “You make all this studying feel worth it.” Jessica’s cheeks flushed slightly as she met his gaze. “I feel the same way. You’re the best part of my day.” But their moment was interrupted by the buzzing of William’s phone. He glanced at the screen, and his face fell as he read the message from his father. With a frustrated sigh, he showed it to Jessica. “Where are you? You’re wasting your time with that girl. Focus on your studies,’” he read aloud, bitterness seeping into his voice. With a huff, he shoved his phone into his backpack. Jessica touched his arm gently. “William, you’re your own person. You don’t have to let him control you.” He shook his head, his jaw clenched. “I know, but it’s hard. He thinks you’re irresponsible just because you’re not like him.” His voice grew louder, anger bubbling up. “I mean, I love you, Jess! I can’t just stop seeing you because he thinks you’re not good enough!” Jessica’s eyes softened as she placed a hand on his cheek. “I love you too. And just remember, we’re adults now. We can make our own choices.” Their fingers intertwined, and for a moment, the world around them faded. William felt his heart swell, fueled by the love he felt for her and the resolve to make his own decisions. But the weight of his father’s expectations still pressed heavily on him. Later that evening, William returned home, his heart still soaring from his time with Jessica. But as he stepped inside, he immediately sensed the tension hanging thick in the air. His father, Mr. Oscar, stood in the living room, arms crossed and face dark with anger. “Where have you been?” Mr. Oscar demanded, his voice sharp. “Out with that girl again?” William’s heart thudded in his chest as he met his father’s stern gaze. “Yes, I was with Jessica,” he replied, his tone defiant. “She’s not just ‘that girl.’ She’s important to me!” Mr. Oscar’s face reddened as he let out a frustrated sigh. “Important? She’s a distraction! You’re wasting your future on someone who doesn’t even have her life together!” William’s fists clenched, his frustration building. “I’m 19, Dad! I can choose who I want to be with! You can’t control me forever!” His father’s voice grew louder, echoing through the house. “You think you can just ignore my advice? I won’t stand for this!” The anger and defiance surged in William’s chest, and he took a step back, shaking his head. “I’m not going to let you dictate my life anymore!” he shouted, his voice trembling with the weight of his words. Without waiting for a response, he turned on his heel and stormed out, leaving his father standing in stunned silence. Outside, the cool night air wrapped around him as he took deep, steadying breaths. His father’s disapproval loomed over him, yet he felt a flicker of liberation. His love for Jessica was worth fighting for, even if it meant defying the man who’d always cast his shadow over his life. In that moment, William knew that the path he’d chosen wouldn’t be easy. But with Jessica by his side, he felt stronger—ready to face whatever came his way, no matter how fierce the storm might be.
