The campus library was a sanctuary of silence, yet the air between William Oscar Jr. and Jessica was thick with unspoken tension. They sat in a secluded corner, textbooks open in front of them, but neither could focus. The weight of their recent struggles bore down on them, casting shadows over the joy they usually shared.
Jessica glanced at William, concern etched in her face. “Will, I don’t want to keep causing problems for you and your family.”
William’s grip on her hand tightened. “No, Jess. This isn’t your fault. My father just refuses to see how amazing you are.”
Jessica sighed, her gaze falling to the pages of her textbook. “But maybe he’s right. I mean, we come from such different worlds. I don’t have the same connections, the same resources… maybe I’m not enough.”
William cupped her face in his hands, his eyes fierce with conviction. “Fate doesn’t make mistakes, Jess. We found each other for a reason. And I’m not letting go.”
Just then, Jessica’s phone buzzed. She glanced at it, and the color drained from her face as she read the message. William noticed her expression shift and leaned closer, alarmed.
“What is it? What happened?”
Her hand shook as she showed him the message. “It’s… your dad. He messaged me. He’s threatening to report me to the university board if I don’t stop seeing you.”
William’s expression darkened, his fists clenching in anger. “That’s it,” he muttered, voice low and dangerous. “He’s gone too far.”
He shot to his feet, accidentally knocking over a stack of books. Heads turned, students peering curiously in their direction. Jessica grabbed his arm, pulling him back down, her voice a desperate whisper. “Will, please. Don’t make a scene.”
He took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm brewing inside him. “I don’t care, Jess. My father has no right to control my life like this. And if he’s going to try and ruin your future because of it?” He shook his head, jaw clenched. “No. I won’t stand for it.”
Jessica looked at him, her eyes soft yet filled with worry. “Will, are you sure? This… it’s going to get messy.”
William’s gaze hardened, his resolve set like stone. “I’m ready. For you? I’d fight anyone. We’re going to prove him wrong—prove them all wrong. They think you’re not good enough, that you’re just some distraction. But they’re wrong. I’ll show them.”
Jessica’s hand found his, and she squeezed it, their connection steady amid the chaos around them. In that moment, they both knew they were stepping into uncertain territory, facing forces that would test them. But together, they were determined to weather whatever came their way.
