CHAPTER 14:BACK TO PRESENT

409 Words
William returned to the present, still seated at the table in the bowling alley, as he was overcome by a newfound clarity. Gabriel watched him closely, sensing the depth of William’s internal struggle. “Are you okay?” Gabriel asked softly, breaking the silence. William nodded slowly, but the sadness in his eyes lingered. “I just wish things had turned out differently,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. The memories of Jessica’s betrayal and her eventual imprisonment resurfaced, but with a new perspective. She was still the mother of his children—their adoptive mother—and despite everything, he couldn’t erase their past completely. Gabriel placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Look, you did what you could, and you’ve been through more than anyone should. It’s okay to feel that way. But remember, you’re here, moving forward.” William took a deep breath, letting the weight of the past ease just a little. “You’re right,” he murmured, a hint of gratitude in his voice. “Maybe it’s time to let go.” Gabriel grinned, eager to lighten the mood. “Alright, how about we blow off some steam? Let’s head out and watch the drifting downtown. There’s a car meet tonight.” William’s eyes brightened slightly, the idea of a distraction sounding better with each passing second. “Yeah, that sounds good. Let’s go.” The two friends left the bowling alley, venturing out to the car meet where engines roared, tires screeched, and smoke filled the air as drivers showed off their drifting skills. The thrill of the night, the energy of the crowd, and the pulse of the cars provided a much-needed escape. William allowed himself to enjoy the moment, if only for a while, feeling the remnants of his burden lift with each drift on the track. Three Months Later Moved by compassion and willingness to let go of the past, William approached the court. “I want to drop the charges against her,” he declared, standing before the judge. His words carried weight, and after some deliberation, the judge agreed to reduce Jessica’s sentence. When she was finally released, William knew he had taken the first step to truly let go of the past. As William walked out of the courthouse, a sense of closure settled within him. He looked up at the sky, feeling ready to embrace his future, leaving the past firmly behind.
