Days had passed since William moved in with Jessica and her family. Sitting on the porch under a shared blanket, they watched the stars, fingers intertwined. The quiet simplicity of life with her felt like freedom.
Jessica smiled, leaning against his shoulder. “Are you really okay with this? Leaving everything?”
William met her gaze, sincerity in his voice. “For the first time, Jess, I feel free. Just us—that’s all I need.” She laughed softly, leaning in as they shared a gentle kiss, one that held all the words they didn’t need to say.
Early the next morning, William clumsily helped with chores, determined to pull his weight. Jessica laughed, showing him the proper way to carry the heavy buckets of water. They worked side by side, their laughter echoing, every moment affirming that he was right where he belonged.
Later, as they studied together in her room, Jessica caught William watching her with a quiet smile. “What?” she teased.
He took her hand. “I didn’t think I could love you more, but every day, I’m proven wrong.”
She blushed, whispering, “You make me feel like I can take on the world.”
He leaned closer. “You already do. And as long as I’m here, we’ll face anything together.”
Later That Evening
Jessica and William sat close on a large rock, gazing up at the stars. Jessica sighed, her tone serious.
“It’s beautiful out here,” she said softly. “But Will… how are we going to make this work? We can’t keep staying with my family. It’s too cramped, and they’re already stretched thin.”
William nodded, taking her hand. “I know, Jess. I don’t want to be a burden.”
She looked down, then back at him. “We have to find a way to stand on our own.”
William’s face brightened. “Actually… I’ve been working on something. A surprise. It’s the first step, Jess. Just trust me.”
Jessica smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. “I trust you.”
They sat in peaceful silence, feeling hope for the future as the stars shone above.
