Chapter 14

Drake’s patience was already tested to its breaking point before they even stepped foot inside Enchanted Kingdom. For the entire ride over, Lucy’s mouth hadn’t stopped firing like an armalite, rapid bursts of random stories and exaggerated commentary. She had gone from complaining about why roosters crowed too early, to passionately explaining why pink was the “color of power,” and even shared a conspiracy theory about why the moon looked bigger on certain nights. He thought his ears would bleed. This girl… unbelievable. If it weren’t for that ridiculous blackmail, I’d be enjoying a peaceful afternoon right now. Instead, I’m trapped in this circus act she calls a date. Lucy was everything he avoided in a woman: loud, dramatic, unfiltered, and borderline insane. His type was refined, composed, and graceful. Out of ten, she was barely a four in his book. And worst of all, he hated, absolutely hated, when she called him Drakey. It made his skin crawl every time, as if she were sprinkling sugar directly into an open wound. Yet, when they finally arrived, all of his annoyance was drowned out by Lucy’s explosive joy. “Wow! It’s so beautiful here!” she squealed, leaping out of the car like a child released into a candy store. Her wide eyes sparkled under the colorful lights of the theme park entrance. She pressed her palms together and spun around, soaking in every sight like it was the most magical place on earth. Drake sighed heavily. Of course, she’d love this place. Childlike chaos suits her perfectly. Still, when he noticed people glancing at them, he reluctantly reached for her hand. Be nice. Just this once. If I don’t, she’ll call me heartless again. Lucy’s joy was annoyingly contagious. She pointed at every ride as though it were a new discovery. “I want to ride everything!” she declared, eyes wide with wonder. Drake grimaced. “Of course you do…” Her gaze locked onto the Ferris wheel towering above them. She practically bounced in place. “That one! I want to ride that first!” Drake’s stomach dropped. He followed her gaze and swallowed hard. The Ferris wheel loomed over the park, spinning slowly and majestically. Nope. Absolutely not. Anything but that. Lucy instantly caught the flicker of fear in his face. Her grin turned devilish. “What’s with that face? Don’t tell me… you’re scared?” “I’m not scared!” His voice cracked slightly. “I just don’t want to ride it.” She smirked, arms crossed. “Deny all you want. You’re terrified. I can practically hear you squealing already.” His pride flared. This crazy girl really wants to humiliate me. “Oh, shut up! I’m not scared, and I’m definitely not gay,” he barked defensively. Her eyes narrowed as if assessing him like a science project. Her stare alone was an insult. Finally, he grabbed her wrist and dragged her to the ticket booth. “Fine. Just to prove you wrong.” Her victorious grin stretched wide as he handed over the money. Moments later, they were seated in the Ferris wheel cabin. Lucy beamed like a child about to unwrap her birthday gift. Before the ride even moved, she let out a loud scream. Drake nearly jumped out of his skin. “What the—? It hasn’t even started yet!” Lucy raised two fingers in a peace sign. “Practice! Warming up my lungs.” Drake groaned, rubbing his face. She’s hopeless. As the ride climbed, he gripped the railing tightly, every nerve in his body screaming. Lucy, however, pressed her nose to the glass and gasped in delight. “Look! Look how tiny everyone looks down there! This is amazing!” she exclaimed. He forced himself to look at her instead of the ground. She was glowing—her laughter, her wide smile, her unfiltered joy. She could be… beautiful, he admitted silently, though he quickly shook the thought away. If only she wasn’t completely insane. Lucy caught him staring. She smirked, tilting her head. “So… starting to like me, Drakey? Falling for me already?” “In your dreams. Don’t flatter yourself,” he snapped back, though his ears betrayed him, burning red. She only laughed louder. By the time the ride ended, Lucy was still bouncing with energy. “That was so fast! One more, Drakey!” Her eyes scanned the park again until she spotted the towering extreme slide. “That one!” she shouted, pointing. Drake blanched. “No way. I’m not riding that. Absolutely not.” “Scared again?” she teased. “I said no!” “Fine. I’ll just ask that handsome guy over there to ride with me—” Drake immediately blocked her path. “Don’t even think about it. Tsk. Let’s go. I’ll ride with you.” Her smirk returned. “You’re jealous.” “I’m being cautious. You’ll probably faint halfway.” “That’s why I was going to ask that guy. You’re just a nuisance,” she teased further. “Whatever,” he muttered, letting her loop her arm through his. She giggled, bouncing his arm as they walked to the ticket line. He groaned internally. Minutes later, they strapped themselves in. Drake’s heart was hammering against his chest. Why can’t I say no to this girl? The ride slowly ascended, higher and higher. Damn it. This is it. My last day alive. All thanks to this crazy woman. At the peak, Lucy grabbed his trembling hand. Her grin was wicked. “Ready?” she asked sweetly. “I’m f-freaking rea—UGH! Goodbye world! I’m going to die!” he screamed as the ride plunged. Lucy screamed too—but hers was full of excitement, not fear. Meanwhile, Drake’s soul was ripped straight out of his body. When they staggered off the ride, Lucy collapsed to the ground, laughing so hard she could barely breathe. “Drake Anderson! Oh my gosh—you screamed like a girl! I can’t breathe!” she wheezed, holding her stomach. People were staring now, whispering, but Lucy didn’t care. She rolled around laughing like a madwoman. Drake’s pride was shattered. He glared at her. “Stop it!” But she just laughed harder. “Hey, Drakey! You’re sulking already? Admit it, you like me now!” she teased. “I don’t know you,” he said coldly, walking off. Lucy scrambled up, still giggling, her eyes already locked onto another target. Her finger shot out. “The space shuttle! Let’s ride that next!” Drake froze. “Do you want to kill me?” Lucy clasped his arm with both hands and winked. “Drakey, if I ever kill you, it’ll be with love. Now stop whining and follow me!” And before he could protest, she dragged him again toward his next t*****e. Lord, save me from this girl. I’m too young to die!
