Ch. 2: Introductions

Luke, what a normal name. Kayla looked at the man in front of her breathing in a sensation she hadn't felt in awhile from another person; calmness. Despite this feeling, she was still shaking. What was it about him that was so relieving? Was Kayla feeling comfortable with him or was she just relieved she wasn't going crazy? "Kayla," she replied shortly. Luke took a step forward, parting his lips in anticipation to speak. Kayla stepped back, bumping into the wall still trembling from the freight before. "It's ok," Luke raised his hands in an attempt to comfort Kayla, "I'm not going to do anything to you." Kayla looked at him, trying to read what he was thinking. Not going to do anything? He has been scaring me ever since I came here! She clutched her hands in each other in attempt to center herself. Bull, I can't trust him. She shifted her weight back and forth as she worked out what to say. "I apologize for the haunting," Luke filled the silence, "I... well like I said, this is my home." "Was" "What?" "It was your home, now you're dead." "I'm still here, aren't I?" His tone was heated. "Well," Kayla looked around searching for reassurance, "yea." "Exactly." Silence fell once again, a seemingly common theme, leaving an awkward air. Kayla decided to break it, "can you not scare me anymore, please?" "Like I said, I am sorry." "Sure," she mumbled, "well nice to meet you ghost boy. Can you leave?" "First, rude. Second, no." "No?" "No. I am staying." He seemed desperate. His body wasn't showing it but his eyes were. Kayla couldn't help but feel bad for him, despite him bullying her the past couple of days. "Fine." "Fine," he replied. "You sleep on the couch, ghost boy." "You don't have a couch." Kayla's cheeks flushed as she tripped on her words, "ah, uh well sleep on the floor out there then!" She spoke loudly out of pure embarrassment. Of course, she didn't have a couch, she had no furniture. She's lucky she had fluffy blankets to sleep on. Luke let an innocent chuckle slip from him. "You are an interesting one." He looked at Kayla, maintaining a soft smile on his face. "Got it, I'll go into the living room." He turned to leave the room, but just before leaving he tilted his head just enough to see her and said, "Oh and my name's not ghost boy." Then he left, leaving the door ajar behind him. "Fine... Luke." Kayla slumped onto the ground still flushed from her previous encounter. She preceded to lay down and curl herself into the blanket that was working as a stand in for the bed. How on Earth did I get here? I moved here to get away from a man, yet here I am sharing a place with one. As she pondered over her current predicament she realized she wasn't shaking anymore. Her flush was gone as well, leaving behind a feeling she could only relate to that of loneliness. Recently, this feeling has been haunting her quite frequently. Thoughts of Kyle suddenly entered her mind. It was flashes of their first week together. How bliss it was. Laughing over spilled drinks, playfully pushing on the couch. Why are they only nice in the beginning? All the good memories playing in her mind were swiftly overrun by ones of pain. Insults in front of friends, bruises forming on her skin, alcohol bottles spilled on the floor. A muffled sob began to break from her, causing her to curl even tighter into herself clutching the scrunched up blanket. I'm scared of being alone. The walls may hold noise well, but Kayla's sob traveled through the ajar door reaching Luke's ears. He peered through the gap in the door, casting a worried gaze at Kayla. She troubled him, for a reason he couldn't explain.. or could he? There was a strange pulling in his chest as he watched her sobbing on the floor. He wanted to ask her if she was okay, but did he even have a right to? She has just met him, he's a ghost, and he has been scaring her since she arrived. The best thing I can do is give her space. I've already made her uncomfortable. Luke walked away from the door remorsefully and fazed through to the balcony. He leaned on the rail gazing longfully out into the cloudy sky. "The moon is pretty tonight."
