Chapter 1: Ghost Of The Hospital

1044 Words
Adrian POV She was breathtaking. Laying there peacefully on the hospital bed, she looked like she belonged in a different world entirely. Her hair was a pale, icy blue—I assumed she had dyed it, but the color was so deep it almost seemed natural. It was the first thing that caught my attention that night I found her. I’d been heading back to my penthouse when I stumbled upon her with those people surrounding her, she was looking more like a broken creature than a living woman. Even with the scars and the bruises, her beauty was undeniable. I stared at her closed eyes, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest, and wondered what kind of monster had done this to her. A boyfriend? A husband? Parents? No. No parent could do this to their own child. I ruffled my hair, the frustration gnawing at me. I hated not knowing. I hated being out of the loop. Just then, the door burst open and Doctor Harry strode in. “Mr. Carrington,” he said, stopping short when he saw me. “Doctor. I stopped by to see how she’s doing.” I tucked my hands into my pockets, watching him check her vitals. “It’s been two weeks, Harry,” I said, my voice tight. “Why isn't she waking up yet?” He exhaled, shaking his head. “I don’t know, Mr. Carrington. Physically, she’s healed. It’s almost impossible how fast those wounds closed up. But her mind... it’s like she’s refusing to wake up.” “Refusing to wake up?” I asked, confused. “Is that even possible?” “Apparently it can, the mind can be a fortress. The body is ready to stand, but the spirit is hiding.” For two weeks, I had been here every single day. I didn't know why I felt so strangely connected to this girl. I wasn't the type to care about strangers, but there was something about her that I couldn't shake. Maybe I’m just curious about how she got the bruises and all. But none of this should be my concern right? I don’t usually care. But…why her? I sighed. I subconsciously touched my jaw. Just then. My phone rang, shattering the silence. I stepped out into the hall to answer. It was Mom. “Hey, Mom,” I said, heading toward the elevator. “Adrian, did you get my message?" She asked. “Yeah I did, the 'meeting stuff.'” I replied in a tired voice. “Adrian, don’t take that tone. This is important. I can't sit back while my two sons keep fighting like children. This grudge has gone on for years.” I rolled my eyes. “Ashton and I are catching up just fine, Mom. You know that.” I said heading to my car not without a quick glance at her door. “It’s not enough. I need to see it with my own eyes. Tomorrow morning, eight o’clock. Let's have breakfast like a family for once. Don’t be late Adrian.” I puffed out a breath. “Alright, Mom. I’ll be there.” She hung up. And I placed the phone on the passenger seat and sighed. Ashton wouldn't like this idea at all, and I didn't have the energy to argue. I started the ignition and zoomed off to my company. After a few hours I was on my way to my house, I checked the time on my phone which read 23:32pm. I exhaled. They really was a lot to sign today, same with the preparation for the annual celebration gala. It was a lot today. By the time I got back to my penthouse, I was already exhausted of driving for that long. I was walking toward the elevator when my phone vibrated. It was Doctor Harry. My heart skipped a beat. Is she awake? Please let this be news of her waking up. I thought aloud. I quickly click on accept. "Doctor, I hope this night call comes with a good news?" I asked as my heart limped up, anticipating the good news. There was a long, heavy silence. “Harry?” I called as he said nothing. “She’s gone,” he whispered almost to himself but I heard it. “She disappeared.” This was louder. I stopped dead in my tracks. “What do you mean, 'disappeared'?” “I’m sorry, Mr. Carrington. I went to her ward for a late-night check, and I couldn't find her the bed was empty. The nurses said they didn't see her leave.” "What ?" I couldn't even hear my own voice. “Then check the damn security footage!” I yelled, my voice echoing in the marble lobby. “I did that too before calling you,” Harry said, sounding breathless. “She wasn't captured on any of the cameras. No one entered, and no one left. It’s like... she just vanished into thin air. I didn't know how she did." “Vanished? You’re telling me she’s a ghost?” I hissed, the irritation boiling over. “People don’t just vanish, Harry!” “I’m sorry Mr Carrington, I’m also confused myself” he said in a shaky breath. I hissed loudly and hung up. I turned back to my car, heading straight to the hospital. My mind was racing. When I got to the hospital, I pulled up and dashed inside. I got to Mr Harry's office and saw him pacing around like he was already expecting me. “Mr Carrington” he exclaimed the moment he saw me. “Alright now explain to me what the heck happened “ I said breathlessly. "It's just as I told you, we've searched everywhere but no traces of her. I don't know if she was taken while asleep or walked out on her own two feet... either way, I don't know what happened, sir." He answered. I scoffed. What is this? A movie? Can someone actually just disappear like that huh? I ruffled my hair in frustration. None of this made sense. She was too weak to walk, let alone bypass hospital security. I needed to find her. And s**t, where do I even begin from?
