Present Day
“SASHAA???” A voice roared up the stairs, jolting her awake. Sasha eyed the room sleepily. Wondering if she had dreamt that voice shouting her name. Snuggling back down in her bed, she was met with the conclusion that the late nights and lack of sleep were playing tricks on her ears. No sooner had she summed this up, her bedroom door flung open with great speed, she heard someone running towards her, she braced for an impact that never came. She peered from her bed covers to see Isabelle standing above her with a disapproving face. “And when where you going to tell us you were home?” Isabelle proclaimed while tapping her foot in annoyance. “Your mom said you’ve been home three days! THREE DAYS SASHA! And not even a text?!” “Give her a break Isabelle, she’s probably been resting.” Sasha darted her eyes towards the voice and saw Sophia sitting at her vanity unit. “Morning Sash.” She said with a sweet smile and a small wave. Sasha smiled broadly back at her. “I’m sorry guys” Sasha said meekly. “I had intended to call yesterday but got caught up and it slipped my mind.”
Isabelle kicked off her shoes and launched herself into the bed with Sasha. She curled into her and smiled. “We just miss you, stupid head.” “I know I miss you two, so much as well, I was planning on staying down here for a while this time.” Isabelle shot up and started bouncing on the bed in elation. “Yeeesss!!! That’s amazing news!” She cheered. “ Why’s that Sash?” Sophie squinted curiously at her. “Well I was possibly thinking—“Are you finally leaving that monster?” Isabelle interrupted flatly.
“Maybe..” she replied in a whisper. “Good, I don’t know why you’ve endured his escapades for so many years.” If only they knew how bad things had really gotten over the years. She shielded many truths from Sophia and Isabelle, to protect her relationship with Malachi. Looking back she was a complete fool with everything he had done to her. She couldn’t even begin to wrap her head around why she even had wanted to preserve such an awful relationship. She shook the thoughts away and began to remain present again as she did so, she realised the conversation had shifted. Sophia and Isabelle babbled about some special DJ that was coming to town. “Sash!!? You’re coming right? Sophia pressed. “When is it?” She replied while stretching her arms in the air. “Tonight!!” They both chimed. “Tonight? I look frightful though” she buried her head into her covers. “Sasha you never look frightful, you big dummy.” Isabelle rolled her eyes in exasperation. “It’ll be like old times, we will all have a blast!” Sasha bounced around the room in excitement. “Ughhh, fine I’ll go but I’ll have to do some serious work to put myself together.” Sasha chuckled. She was met with two pillows to the face and they all laughed. “Let’s head out for coffee and then we can get ready in my place.” Smiled Isabelle. “Okay then!” “Get yourself ready and meet us downstairs in five.” Isabelle and Sophia departed the room. Sasha looked into the mirror and thought hard about Malachi and Kai. Should she rest her heart in a man she just met? She shook her head in annoyance and reached for her phone. She opened her phone book and scrolled to Malachi’s number. Pausing she looked at his name, that still had the little red heart that he had put so many years ago. She took a large intake of breath to calm herself. Exhaling, she then clicked the call button. With baited breath she listened to the phone ring. It felt like an eternity had passed and she heard him answer. “Hello pretty girl! What’s up?” “Malachi.. I don’t want to do this anymore, I’ve never been more miserable with you and your behaviour is God awful and you disrespect my feelings every day with all the women you have in our bed and I’m no longer interested being called your girlfriend when you don’t honour the relationship we have, not to mention all the times you been mentally and physically abusive—” Sasha had so much more to say but Malachi interrupted.“So what? We’re breaking up?” Sasha was astonished at how he took it so easily. Did she mean anything to him at all? “Yeah.. I guess.” She said in a whisper. Malachi inhaled sharply. “If that’s what you want then so be it. I’ll drop your stuff to your house in a few days.” “Umm okay then.” A tear ran down her cheek, she wasn’t sure if it was because she was hurt by his indifferent attitude towards their relationship ending or because she couldn’t imagine her life without him. Even though the last few years had been miserable, her life had only been Malachi. He spoke again shaking her from thought. “I’ll call you when I’m on my way.” “Okay, Good Bye Malachi.” “Bye Sasha.” The phone hung up and she looked at in with heartache. “ Why do you even care, he doesn’t.” She exclaimed aloud to herself. Putting the phone down, she headed over to her closest and selected a black Co-ord set, slipped into it and tied her hair into a tight high pony tail. Grabbing her phone, wallet and keys she headed downstairs. Sophia and Isabelle were waiting impatiently in the car for her. “Oh my god, it’s about time, what took you so long??” “ I broke up with Malachi.” Sasha whispered. “Wait hold up what???” They both whipped their heads toward her in the back seat, eyes wide filled with shock. “I couldn’t do it anymore, the other women, the abuse. It was time to get away from the toxicity.” She was looking down at her feet while she spoke, embarrassed to admit things out loud. “We support you no matter what Sash, we always want the best for you.” Sophia said while stretching her hand towards her. “We love you so much, don’t be sad you can do one million times better.” Isabelle climbed in the back and stretched her arms around Sasha pulling her into a tight hug. “If you need to talk, you can talk as much as you want, we will always be here you know that.” Returning the hug while holding Sophia’s hand she felt relief and comfort. “I’ll be fine guys I know it. I’m so happy to have you both. You are my rocks honestly.” Sasha wiped away a tear and smiled at them both. “Come let’s go get caffeine to get ready for tonight! It’s the first time in ages we have all been single!!” Sophia exclaimed. Turning the key in her car she began to drive towards the coffee shop. While the car drove, Sasha watched the buildings pass by, in her heart she felt absolutely no remorse for leaving Malachi. She was glad to be rid of him but her heart ached due to the fact she didn’t know how to live without him. 5 years of her life had been dedicated to everything he had wanted. Who was Sasha without Malachi? I guess we will find out soon enough.
