SHADOWS IN THE FOREST

487 Words
Lyra’s heart pounded as the stranger stepped closer, his amber eyes studying her intently. She tried to hide her fear, but the tension in the air was undeniable. Every rustle in the underbrush made her senses scream. She wasn’t just a mate rejected by her alpha—she was prey in a forest that had suddenly become hostile. “You shouldn’t be here alone,” he said softly, almost a warning, his voice carrying the weight of experience. “And who says I’m alone?” Lyra snapped, though her voice trembled, betraying the anxiety she tried to hide. The stranger smirked, a hint of amusement dancing across his sharp features. “Because everyone else has abandoned you. Even the alpha who should protect you.” Lyra’s ears twitched. How did he know? Her jaw clenched, but she didn’t back down. “I’m Rylan,” he said, extending a hand. “And I don’t care about pack rules. I care about survival… yours, and maybe mine too.” Lyra hesitated. Trusting a stranger was dangerous—but staying alone in the forest might be deadlier. Her mind raced, weighing the risks. Finally, she nodded, silently agreeing to follow him. Before she could speak, a low growl echoed from the shadows. Lyra froze. The sound was deep and threatening, vibrating through the soil beneath her feet. From between the trees, a group of rogue wolves emerged, their eyes glowing red in the moonlight. Their snarls were sharp, and saliva dripped from jagged teeth. “Run!” Rylan shouted, grabbing her hand and pulling her forward. Lyra’s instincts kicked in. She transformed into her wolf form, the cool night air brushing against her fur. Her muscles tensed, senses sharpened. Together, she and Rylan darted through the trees, weaving between trunks, dodging snapping jaws, and leaping over roots that threatened to trip them. The rogue wolves were relentless, hot on their trail. Branches scratched their faces and tore at their fur, but Lyra felt a surge of adrenaline. This was survival, raw and unfiltered. She glanced at Rylan as they ran side by side. His expression was focused, fierce, but there was something protective in his stance that made her chest tighten. Finally, they burst into a small clearing. Rylan’s chest heaved with exertion, but his eyes never left hers. Around them, the forest seemed calm, but the echoes of growls lingered, a reminder that danger was still near. “Looks like your rejection isn’t the only danger you’re facing,” he said, a serious edge replacing the teasing tone from before. Lyra’s pulse raced. The forest was full of shadows—and she was about to discover just how dark some of them could be. Her mind whirled with questions: Who were these rogue wolves? Why had they appeared now? And why did she feel, for the first time since her rejection, that maybe she wasn’t completely alone after all?
