THE REJECTED MATE

259 Words
The full moon hung low in the sky, casting silver light over the dense forest. Lyra’s heart raced as she navigated the narrow paths, her senses alert. Every snap of a twig made her flinch. She wasn’t just any human—or any wolf. She was the mate of an alpha… or at least, she should have been. But Alpha Kael had rejected her. The memory burned fresh in her mind. The great hall of the pack, the expectant eyes of the clan, and Kael’s cold words: “You are not mine. You never will be.” Lyra’s claws dug into the dirt beneath her feet as she swallowed the hurt. She wasn’t weak—far from it—but rejection from the alpha marked her in the eyes of everyone. The whispers had already started. “Did you see Lyra?” one pack member hissed behind her. “The alpha himself turned her away…” Lyra didn’t look back. She had to survive. And she would. Alone, if necessary. But just as she thought she could disappear into the night, a shadow moved ahead—another wolf, taller, stronger, with eyes that glowed like amber in the moonlight. “You’re not running, are you?” the stranger asked, his voice low but teasing. Lyra’s tail twitched, a warning. “Who are you?” “I’m someone who doesn’t believe in rejected mates,” he replied, stepping closer, and with that, a spark of hope—and danger—ignited in Lyra’s chest. Tonight, her story was only beginning.
