9. Strange Things

Scarlet couldn’t sleep, she’d tried all the methods she’d used before, but she kept feeling like something was calling her outside.  Finally she gave up and stood, leaning against the wall and staring outside into the darkness.  Something tugged at her conscience and she opened her window, letting in the fresh air and the scent of forest and earth. Whatever was calling to her was outside.  She glanced over her shoulder towards her closed bedroom door.  Her father would flip if she went out at night, but she had a sense of urgency about being out there when she couldn’t explain it to herself. Finally she made her decision and did what most teenagers do when they sneak out at night; she arranged her bedding so it looked like she was still sleeping.  Just in case her father would glance int
