POV: Elara
Sweat trickled down the small of my back as I tried to keep a steady rhythm, serving drinks for my tables, dodging grabby hands, trying not to jump on every alpha that glances my way. My body felt like it was on fire, and my heart pounded against my chest as a sudden surge of desire coursed through me. This couldn't be happening. If I didn't know any better, I would say I was going into heat. But that can't be the case. Betas don't have heats.
"Elara, are you okay?" my coworker, Serena, asked, her eyes full of concern. "You look really flushed."
"I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile onto my face. It felt strange and unnatural, but I didn't want anyone to know what I was going through. Especially not the alphas who frequented the club. With their strong jaws, broad shoulders, and intense gazes, they were already intimidating enough without knowing my body was mimicking heat for some unknown reason.
"Sweetie, it looks like your first heat," another coworker, Lila, chimed in gently. "It's nothing to be ashamed of."
"Impossible," I snapped, struggling to keep my voice steady. "I'm a beta, remember?"
"Elara, we're just worried about you," Serena insisted. "Maybe you should take a break and get some fresh air."
"Fine," I conceded, wiping my damp palms on my skirt. The last thing I needed was to drop a glass or spill a drink because my hands were shaking.
As I stepped away from the bar, I could feel the weight of the alphas' eyes on me, their curiosity and skepticism palpable. Nathaniel Stormridge, who hated me because he thought I was lying about being a beta and this would do nothing to dissuade him, leaned against a nearby wall, watching me with his piercing blue eyes. His wavy black hair framed his face, making him look even more dangerous than usual. I knew he yearned for my submission, for me to bow down to him, tell him he was right, I was lying and beg for his forgiveness, and the thought both terrified and excited me.
"Elara," he called out, his voice deep and commanding. "Is everything alright?"
"Everything's fine," I responded, trying to sound casual as my heart raced in my chest. I could feel the heat radiating off him even from a distance, I could smell his unique scent of whiskey and man, and it took all my strength not to walk over and press myself against his strong body, rubbing myself all over him like a cat marking her territory.
"Are you sure about that?" he questioned, one dark eyebrow raised skeptically. "You look like you're in some distress."
"Distress? Me? Never. I'm just taking a break, that's all." My laugh came out forced, betraying my growing panic.
"Very well," Nathaniel replied, his eyes still lingering on me as I hurried away, seeking refuge outside the club. My mind reeled, caught between fear and desire, questioning what my body was going through.
I paced back and forth outside the club, the cool night air doing little to quell the heat that coursed through my body. My mind was a jumbled mess, trying to make sense of what was happening to me. Could they be right? Could this really be my first heat? If so, why now, and what did that mean for me and the alphas who seemed determined to demean me? What did that mean about my life?
Both of my parents were betas. Betas could only have other betas, even if they mated with an alpha, the child was always a beta. Only an omega could birth an omega.
But here I was, feeling like my body was betraying me, reacting to the presence of alphas in a way that only omegas were supposed to. And not just any alphas - Nathaniel, Gabriel, Xavier, and Arthur--my bosses and the men who had made it their mission to prove I was lying about being a beta.
I let out a frustrated growl as I leaned against the brick wall of the building, trying to calm myself down. It didn't make any sense. How could I suddenly be experiencing something that went against everything I had ever known about myself?
But then again, there were things about myself that I didn't fully understand or couldn't explain. Like how I always seemed to be the center of attention, even when I didn't want to. How I could smell a man without seeing him and know if he was an alpha or a beta.
Maybe there was more to me than just being a beta.
I shook my head, pushing away those thoughts for now. Right now, I needed to focus on getting through this strange heat and figuring out why it was happening.
Taking deep breaths, I tried to calm my racing heart and slow my labored breathing. But it seemed like every time I started to relax, another wave of heat would wash over me and I would be back to square one.

The world seemed to blur around me as my body continued to betray me, my scent intensifying and changing into something irresistible. As my body betrayed me, a heady and alluring aroma emanated from my pores, a mix of musk and pheromones that tantalized and ensnared the senses. It was a scent that promised danger and seduction, drawing in the alphas like bees to honey. I could sense the way the alphas' gazes sharpened, drawn to me like moths to a flame. Every fiber of my being screamed for me to flee, to hide away from their penetrating stares and overwhelming presence.
"Elara," Gabriel called out, his voice low and husky, as he approached me near one of my tables. "You're not fooling anyone; your scent has changed. You can't stay out here. Look around. Everyone is noticing your scent, the alphas are starting to stir. You aren't safe to stay here."
As I scan the room, my eyes catch on a group of alphas, their predatory gazes fixed on me. It's as if I am the prey in a pack of wolves, and they are all vying for the chance to claim me as their own. Their hungry eyes track my every move, yearning for the moment they can make me theirs. The intensity of their stares sends shivers down my spine and I can feel their hunger radiating towards me like an invisible forcefield.
"Leave me alone, Gabriel," I snapped, trying to keep my composure. But even as I spoke, I could feel my legs trembling beneath me, wobbly and weak.
"Elara, you need help," Arthur chimed in, his tone softer but no less insistent. "We can see that you're struggling. Let us help you."
"Help?" I scoffed, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. "You mean take advantage of me. I'm fine on my own."
Xavier stepped forward, his tall frame casting a shadow over me. "What's happening to you isn't something you can handle by yourself. Trust me, I've seen it before."
"Trust you?" My voice shook with emotion. "How am I supposed to trust any of you when all you've ever done is torment me?"
"Believe it or not, Elara, we care about you," Nathaniel said, his deep voice resonating in my chest. "Your well-being is important to us. We don't want to see you suffer. We have only ever wanted you to be honest with us. You are clearly not a beta. You're in heat."
"I'm not lying!" I snap, frustrated. "I've never lied to you. My parents are betas, both of them. I have to be a beta." Liar, my brain screamed at me. How can it be true that I am a beta when I am clearly in heat.
Nathaniel's dark eyes pierced into mine, his brows furrowed in concentration. His long lashes fluttered slightly as he searched for any hint of deception in my expression. I could see the determination in his gaze, even as my own eyes welled up with tears. There was no trace of falsehood in my words, and I knew he wouldn't find one.
"Okay," he finally said. "You're not lying. Someone is lying to you then. We can figure that out later. Right now, you need us."
"Please, Elara," Arthur pleaded. "Let us help you through this. You don't have to face it alone."
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I considered their words. My body ached with need, and my strength was rapidly fading. Despite my fear and lingering resentment towards these men who had caused me so much heartache, I knew deep down that I couldn't do this on my own.
"Fine," I whispered, finally giving in. "But only because I have no other choice."
"Good," Nathaniel said, his eyes softening ever so slightly. "We'll take care of you, Elara. We promise."
