Chapter 9: Into the Umbra

1719 Words
The safehouse didn’t feel safe anymore. --- Not after Liora. Not after the Architect. --- And definitely not after what Lena and Julian brought with them. --- Maps covered the table. Hand-drawn. Messy. But precise. --- Elian stood over them, eyes scanning every line, every symbol, every connection. They weren’t random. They *couldn’t* be. --- “This is a pattern,” he said quietly. --- Julian nodded. “Yeah. We’ve been tracking it for weeks.” --- Lena pointed to one of the markings. “This one showed up recently. Same symbol… but deeper. Like it’s evolving.” --- Nyx stepped closer. “It is.” --- Akira leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “Not chaos,” she muttered. “Design.” --- Marcus exhaled slowly. “They’re building something.” --- Elian’s jaw tightened. “For what?” --- Silence. --- Nyx tapped one of the symbols. “This is Umbra.” --- Elian frowned. “The Order?” --- Nyx shook her head. “No. Umbra is beneath the Order.” A beat. “Hidden. Off-record. Untouchable.” --- Akira’s voice cut in. “They don’t deal with problems.” “They create solutions… no matter the cost.” --- Lena swallowed. “And we’ve been tracking them this whole time?” --- Nyx nodded. “Yes.” --- Elian straightened. “Then we go there.” --- Marcus looked at him. “That’s not a place you walk into.” --- Elian didn’t hesitate. “We’re not walking in.” A pause. “We’re sneaking in.” --- Akira watched him. Then— She nodded. --- “We observe,” she said. “No fighting unless necessary.” --- Julian crossed his arms. “Spy mission.” --- “Exactly.” --- Nyx pointed at the map. “Industrial sector. Looks abandoned.” --- Akira pushed off the wall. “It’s not.” --- “Then we move tonight.” --- --- The Umbra facility didn’t look like anything special. --- Broken walls. Dead lights. Silence. --- But Elian felt it immediately. --- Pressure. --- Watching. --- “Stay sharp,” Akira whispered. --- They moved along the edge. Silent. Measured. --- Julian stayed close to Lena. Protective. Alert. --- “Entry,” Marcus murmured. --- A narrow side door. Almost invisible. --- Akira tested it. Then nodded. --- “Inside.” --- --- The air changed instantly. --- Cold. Sterile. Wrong. --- Lights flickered weakly overhead. Machines hummed deeper within. --- Elian’s chest tightened. --- “Spread out,” Akira whispered. --- They moved carefully. Room by room. --- Symbols covered the walls. Carved. Layered. Alive in a way that didn’t make sense. --- Lena stopped. “It’s the same pattern…” --- Julian stepped beside her. “But completed.” --- Nyx’s expression darkened. “They’re refining it.” --- Elian frowned. “For what?” --- Then— They heard it. --- A sound. --- Low. Mechanical. --- Breathing. --- Not human. --- They followed it. Slowly. Carefully. --- Until they reached a half-open door. --- Light spilled out. --- Elian stepped forward. Looked inside— --- And everything stopped. --- “…No.” --- Mike. --- Suspended. --- His body hung mid-air, bound by metal restraints that pierced into his limbs. --- Pipes ran through him. --- Not attached— Inserted. --- His veins were visible beneath his pale skin. Dark fluid moved through them. Injected. Pulled out. Recycled. --- His chest barely rose. --- His lips were colorless. --- His eyes— Half open. But empty. --- “Elian…” Nyx whispered. --- But he couldn’t hear her. --- He stepped closer. Slow. Shaking. --- “…Mike…” --- A faint sound escaped him. --- Not a word. --- A broken breath. --- Mike twitched. --- Just slightly. --- Like something inside him reacted. --- Machines pulsed. --- Symbols on the screens shifted— Responding. --- Lena covered her mouth. “Oh my God…” --- Julian’s fists clenched. “They’re… using him.” --- Nyx stepped closer to the system. Her voice dropped. --- “He’s not just alive…” A pause. “…he’s being turned into something.” --- Elian’s voice hardened. “For what?” --- Nyx didn’t look at him. --- “A conduit.” --- Silence. --- “For the Architect.” --- That hit deeper than anything. --- Elian stepped forward again. --- “I’m getting him out.” --- “No.” --- Akira’s voice was immediate. Sharp. Final. --- Elian turned. --- “I’m not leaving him here.” --- “And if you try,” Akira said, stepping closer, “you die before you even touch him.” --- “He’s my friend!” --- “And this is a system you don’t understand!” --- Elian looked back at Mike. --- Pale. Broken. Used. --- “…He’s still in there,” Elian said quietly. --- Mike’s fingers twitched again. --- Like he heard him. --- Like he was fighting. --- That was enough. --- Elian took a step— --- And the world shifted. --- A soft alarm. --- Not loud. --- But precise. --- Nyx’s head snapped up. “They know.” --- The shadows moved. --- And then— They came. --- Not guards. --- Not soldiers. --- Something far worse. --- They emerged like nightmares tearing through reality— Bodies unnaturally lean. Skin stretched too tight. Veins dark and pulsing like something was wrong beneath them. --- Their eyes— Burning. --- But not controlled. --- Broken. --- Feral vampire adepts. --- One dropped from the ceiling— Too fast— --- Elian barely moved in time as claws tore past his throat. --- “MOVE!” Akira snapped. --- More came. --- Not coordinated. --- Not tactical. --- Just hunger. --- One lunged at Lena— Julian intercepted it, slamming it into the ground—but it twisted instantly, snapping back up with inhuman speed. --- “They don’t feel pain!” he shouted. --- “They don’t need to!” Nyx replied. --- An adept charged Elian— --- He stepped into it. --- Caught it— --- Its skin felt wrong. Too cold. Too thin— Like something inside was pushing outward. --- It grinned at him. --- Its jaw unhinged slightly— Too wide. --- Feral. --- Elian twisted— Bone snapped— --- It didn’t stop. --- Light flared in his palm— Controlled— --- He released it— --- A sharp burst— --- The adept was thrown back— Slamming into the wall— Still twitching. --- “DON’T FIGHT—MOVE!” Akira shouted. --- She moved like a storm— Precise. Lethal. --- But even she didn’t linger. --- This wasn’t winnable. --- More were coming. --- From every direction. --- Nyx stepped forward— Her eyes flashed— --- Two adepts froze mid-lunge— Screaming— --- “GO!” she snapped. --- They ran. --- Elian looked back— Just once— --- Mike’s body jerked violently— --- The machines surged— --- And for a split second— --- His eyes moved. --- Locked onto Elian. --- Alive. --- Trapped. --- Then— Gone again. --- “Elian!” Akira grabbed him. --- “MOVE!” --- They broke through the corridor— --- More adepts poured in— Climbing walls— Dropping from ceilings— Moving like predators without limits. --- Julian forced open the exit— --- Cold air hit them— --- They burst outside— --- The adepts stopped at the threshold. --- Not because they couldn’t follow— --- Because something inside held them back. --- Something controlling them. --- Watching. --- --- They didn’t stop running. --- Not until the facility disappeared behind them. --- --- The safehouse was silent when they returned. --- Too quiet. --- Elian stood in the center of the room. --- “…He’s alive.” --- No one argued. --- “They’re using him,” he continued. --- Nyx nodded. --- “For something bigger.” --- Julian ran a hand through his hair. --- “That place… it’s not just a base.” --- Lena’s voice shook slightly. --- “It’s a lab.” --- Akira’s voice was cold. --- “A creation point.” --- Elian’s fists clenched. --- “They’re turning him into something.” --- Silence. --- “What is the Architect?” he asked. --- Nyx answered this time. --- “Not a person.” A pause. “…a system.” --- “Something being built,” Lena added. --- “Using people,” Julian finished. --- Elian exhaled slowly. --- Then looked up. --- Resolved. --- Focused. --- Different. --- “I’m going back.” --- Nyx stepped forward. --- “Not like that.” --- “I don’t care.” --- Akira cut in. --- “You should.” --- Elian met her eyes. --- “If you rush in now,” she said, “you die.” A beat. “And so does he.” --- That stopped him. --- Barely. --- “…Then we plan.” --- Julian nodded. --- “Yeah. Because that place? It’s layered. We barely got in once.” --- Lena added— “And now they know we exist.” --- Nyx looked at Elian. --- “You want him back?” --- Elian didn’t hesitate. --- “Yes.” --- “Then we do this right.” --- A long silence followed. --- Then— Akira stepped forward. --- “We study the system.” --- Julian: “Find weaknesses.” --- Lena: “Map their patterns.” --- Marcus: “Prepare for resistance.” --- Nyx: “And understand what they’re building.” --- All eyes turned to Elian. --- His voice was quiet. --- But unshakable. --- “And we bring him home.” --- Silence. --- No one argued. --- Because now— --- It wasn’t just a mission. --- It was a promise. --- And somewhere— Deep inside Umbra— --- Mike’s body convulsed again. --- The fluid inside him darkened. --- The symbols pulsed faster. --- And something— Deep within him— --- Began to change.
