It took me 20 minutes to arrive at the police station after paying for my ride. I entered the station and inquired about the person in charge of that case. It was sub-inspector Anthony. And he went to the hospital to record statements of all the victims of that case.
The hospital was nearby, so I headed towards the hospital. Fortunately, I found sub-inspector Anthony and his team at the hospital entrance. They were about to leave after recording the statements.
Excuse me Anthony Sir, can I have a minute with you?
Anthony: Yes, who are you?
Hello sir, my name is Jiya, and I am one of the victims of that fire incident in the circus.
Anthony: Oh! Check the list and confirm there was a person with this name.
Assistant: Yes sir, ward no 5. The doctor said she was discharged yesterday.
Anthony: OK Miss Jiya, tell me. How can I help you? And we need to record your statement as well.
Jiya: Yes, we can do that right now.
Anthony: Did you see how the fire started? Was there anything you saw that night?
Jiya: No, I don’t have any idea how the fire started. When the man and the tiger act, was being performed someone started to shout that the curtain had caught fire and then the entire hall was in chaos. Everyone started to run.
Anthony: All right did you see that person who first shouted?
Jiya: no
Anthony: Okay, we are done, you wanted to ask something.
Jiya: Yes, when people started to run that day. I was pushed by the crowd and my leg was injured. Smoke filled the hall. Before I lost consciousness, I saw someone who saved my life but could not see his face. I want to know who saved me.
Anthony: Well, I don’t have any idea about him. When we reached the scene that night, firefighters were already there. Maybe you were saved by them, but honestly, I don’t think anyone will be able to tell you clearly who that person was. He could be anyone from the crowd. Maybe someone saw you and helped you. You were lucky you didn’t die. The fire that night was substantial. Many died and even some bodies were not recovered. We will take our leave now.
Jiya: Thank you, Officer Anthony.
I took a cab back to the hotel. What was I thinking? How could it be him? Tears ran down my eyes. How can it be possible? I know he is no more but still ………
It was just a dream, my illusion and not the truth. The truth is, he is gone forever. He would never return. It was my fault; how can I think that he would come and save me if I even deserved it? If not for me, he wouldn't have died.
