Back at her apartment, Janet's mind traveled to the content of the document. It was a schedule for upcoming meetings. Of particular interest was one that Otunba Williams himself would be attending. Janet paced to and fro in her tiny room. How can I work my way to that meeting? What can I do? Is this the right time?
The Next Day
Janet thought of asking Mrs. Mary if she could just handle the cleaning at the meeting. But she knew better that Mrs. Mary might become suspicious. "I will let this slide. Perhaps there will be more seamless opportunities.”
Later that evening, as Janet was rounding up her shift, Mrs. Mary moved towards her, her eyes red and puffy." Janet, there is something you need to see. Please, come with me.”
Janet followed her to the closet. Mrs. Mary opened her bag and brought out a sealed envelope addressed to Janet. " What is this Ma? " Janet asked. "It's a letter for you. It's from the HR." Mrs. Mary responded with a sober tone. "Ma, the letter is addressed to me, why are you crying? Do you know the content?" Janet's hand trembled as she took the letter.
Mrs. Mary shook her head," I don't know, but you need to open it. I was just preparing for the worst."
"The Worse? Why? " Janet asked "Yes, my daughter. You see, in Williams Holdings, when you receive a letter from HR, it's either tears or laughter. Since you have been here only a few months, it's only expected that it will be tears, not laughter. I am afraid I am going to lose you."
Janet gently opened the letter. Her heart was racing. As she scanned through the letter, her eyes widened in shock. She decided to read the letter aloud...
" Dear Janet James,
We have seen your unwavering dedication and zeal. Your exceptional commitment to your work has not gone unnoticed.
I am directed to inform you that you have been selected for a special assignment - one that will grant you access to the executive floor.
As you step into this new role, we trust that you will continue to optimize your performance.
Congratulations, Janet.
May this opportunity propel you toward even greater achievements.
Kindly report to Mr. Ade, the office manager for further information.
Regards,
For: Head, HR
Lucy Smith”
"Wow. Congratulations my dear." Mrs. Mary hugged Janet in excitement. "This is good news. But how did this happen? You are only 9 months here. That was fast. Anyways, you deserve it, my dear. it's time you moved up. "
Janet was so excited. This was the opportunity she had been waiting for. But it meant she had to be even more careful.
The Next Day...
Janet reported to Mr. Ade as instructed. “Good morning Mr. Ade" "Good morning Janet!" They greeted." Congratulations on your well-deserved appointment. Please have a seat," he gestured, pointing her to the chair opposite him.
"Thank you Sir" Janet responded as she took her seat.
"You’ve have been doing excellent work, Janet. This new role requires maintaining the executive offices and assisting with special projects. You will be given access to the upper floors and boardroom. From today, you will begin to work closely with the executive team. Please, don’t screw things up. Be professional and discreet." Mr. Ade explained.
Janet shook her head, trying to conceal her excitement. "I'll do my best sir." "I have no doubt you will. Please, report to Tunde for your first assignment, " Mr. Ade said, handing her a file.
In Tunde's Office
Janet met Tunde in his office, overwhelmed with office work. "Hello Tunde! My name is Janet. I'm here for my new assignment. Mr. Ade asked me to give you this.”
Tunde paused, looked up and asked "Oh. You are Janet D' Janitor?"
"Well, technically, yes" Janet responded. She liked the sound of that. "Please, come in!” Tunde beacons.
"Well, there is a lot to do. Let's get straight to business. You can start by filling out these documents. You know how to do that right?" Tunde continued. "Yes. I do. I will go straight to it" Janet responded. "Please, keep the most recent on top." Tunde cautioned.
As she worked, she couldn't help but notice how overwhelming the tasks were for Tunde. "Is this what you do daily?” she asked. “Well, this is the least of the things I do daily. It can be very tiring but rewarding." Tunde responded. "I see. You can use my help, when you are in need. " Janet offered.
"That's so thoughtful of you Janet D' Janitor. I will keep that in mind. " Tunde responded.
Planting the Seeds...
In no time, the nick name “Janet D' Janitor” began to spread like wildfire. Her subtle influence began to take root. The title was synonymous with help. " If you need any help around here, just call Janet D' Janitor, she will lighten your burden." One of the Executive Directors said to another at the lobby.
Janet made sure to be present during key moments, helping out and paying attention to conversations. Keeping her mind open to any useful information that she would store in her archive.
She learned about the operations of Williams Holdings. The power dynamics, and key players.
One faithful day, as she was cleaning the conference room, Janet overheard a heated conversation between two executives about a contentious project. She took note of the details and stored them in her mental archive.
As she began to build trust, Janet started planting seeds of doubt and discord. She would casually mention disparities she noticed or express concern about certain decisions, always in a way that seemed innocent and well-meaning.
"Musa, have you observed Mr. Philip lately? I’m not too sure but I think you may need to give attention to his activities. I see the way he looks at you when your gaze is far from him. Please, be careful" she said to her colleague one day in the Staff Kitchen, managed by KUK’s Delight Restaurant. "Well, I haven't really noticed. But now that you have said it, I will give attention to it going forward." Musa replied.
Late One Evening
As Janet was tidying up the Executive floor, she noticed light coming from the door of one of the executive offices. The soft dialogue pulled her closer. As she drew near, she pressed her head on the door to pick up the conversation. "Are you sure this is the right move?" A voice asked. "We have no choice Sir. If this gets out, it could ruin everything," The other voice replied.
Janet's heart pounded so hard. Her mopping stick on her right hand, and her mobile phone on her left. She pressed harder to hear more...
Suddenly, the door swung open. Behold a huge, hulking and handsome titan stood before her. It was no other person than Otunba Williams Adekunle.
