I was literally just trying to pass the time, trying to exist without Jack—and that was apparently already hard. Each minute seemed to stretch endlessly, a quiet reminder of the void his absence had left in my life. I couldn’t begin to describe how awful I felt when he had called me, slurring his words, just wanting to hear my voice. The raw vulnerability in his tone struck me deeply. I could hear how tired he was, how much he just wanted to sleep but couldn’t find the peace to do so. When he finally drifted off to the sound of me reading aloud, my heart ached for him in ways I couldn’t put into words. He had been trying so hard to hold himself together, but it was clear he was barely hanging on. The elevator dinged softly, the sound echoing faintly in the hallway as the doors slid open
