CHAPTER THIRTY NINE 11:28 a.m. Eastern Standard Time Foscoe, North Carolina For a moment, Luke didn’t think their car was going to make it. The driveway was a steep dirt road, pockmarked and rutted, which wound uphill through dense woods—the trees were already barren for winter. The road dead-ended at the cabin. Their car was a rental sedan—it wasn’t made for climbing. Somehow, it crested the hill and they parked it in the dusty dooryard—right next to the four-wheel drive, open-air Jeep already there.
