The First Move

... The next morning... Silvercrest Academy felt different. Not because of the weather. Not because of the students. Because someone had quietly shifted the balance. The rumors that had begun yesterday had only grown overnight. Sera felt dozens of eyes follow her as she crossed the courtyard. "...She's getting close to Damien Cross." "I heard she used to chase Adrian Ashford." "So she gave up and moved on already?" "What kind of girl changes that quickly?" Sera kept walking. She had learned something after dying once. People would always have something to say. She could waste her life trying to silence them... Or she could keep living. She chose the latter. ... Inside Class 2-A... Evelyn waved enthusiastically. "Sera!" Sera smiled and hurried over. "Morning." Evelyn leaned closer. "Ignore them." "I'm trying." "You don't have to try alone anymore." Sera looked at her best friend before quietly smiling. "...Thank you." Before Evelyn could reply... The classroom door slid open. Lily Everhart entered. As always... Elegant. Graceful. Every movement looked rehearsed. She wore her usual gentle smile. The kind that made teachers adore her. And students trust her. Trailing behind her were three girls. Vanessa Cole Long chestnut hair. Sharp brown eyes. Vice president of the Literature Club. She never raised her voice. She didn't need to. Rumors spread faster when whispered. Sophia Hart Golden curls framed her doll-like face. She laughed easily. Smiled sweetly. And could cry on command. If manipulation was an art... Sophia deserved awards. Bianca Rhodes Daughter of one of the city's wealthiest families. Always dressed perfectly. Always looking down on everyone else. To Bianca... Popularity was currency. And Lily was the safest investment. The four girls walked together like royalty entering a ballroom. The classroom instantly grew quieter. Lily's gaze landed on Sera. For just a fraction of a second... Something cold flickered behind her smile. Then it vanished. "Sera." Her voice remained gentle. "I'm glad to see you're doing better." Sera met her eyes. "...Thank you." Lily tilted her head. "I've been worried." Evelyn nearly snorted. "Worried?" Lily simply smiled. "Of course." "We're classmates." Sera noticed it. The smile never reached Lily's eyes. Meanwhile... The Student Council Office. Noah Bennett stared at the paused security footage again. Vanessa. Standing beside Sera's school bag. Planting the missing bracelet. He rubbed his temple. "This doesn't make sense." If Vanessa did it... Then Lily... His thoughts stopped. No. He couldn't accuse someone without proof. A knock interrupted him. "Come in." Adrian stepped inside. "You wanted to see me?" Noah nodded. "I wanted your opinion." He turned the monitor toward Adrian. The footage began playing. Adrian watched silently. Vanessa. Sera's bag. The bracelet. His brows slowly furrowed. "...This wasn't in the disciplinary report." "It was deleted." Adrian looked up. "...Deleted?" "I restored it." Silence settled between them. For the first time... Adrian questioned everything he thought he knew. ... Lunch break. The rooftop. Leo had somehow convinced Kai to buy him two lunches. "This is friendship." "This is theft." "Details." Jace quietly opened his juice. Damien ignored them all. Then... The rooftop door opened. Sera stepped outside. "I brought dessert." Leo practically teleported. "SERA!" She laughed. "I only made pudding." "I'll marry whoever invented pudding." Kai sighed. "You said that about fried chicken yesterday." "I have a big heart." "It's mostly stomach." Everyone laughed. Even Damien let out the smallest breath of amusement. Sera caught it. "You smiled." "I didn't." "You definitely did." "...Prove it." "I can't." "Exactly." Leo looked between them dramatically. "I'm witnessing something illegal." "What?" "Flirting." Damien threw an unopened juice box at him. It hit perfectly. ... Across the courtyard... Lily watched from beneath the shade of an oak tree. Vanessa folded her arms. "They're getting closer." "I can see that." "What now?" Lily's fingers brushed the pages of the novel she wasn't reading. "Sera found something she loves." "The art room." Sophia frowned. "So?" Lily finally looked up. "People protect what they treasure." She closed the book. "If you want to hurt someone..." "...don't attack them." "Take away the thing that gives them hope." The three girls exchanged glances. Bianca smiled knowingly. "So we're targeting her paintings." Lily's smile returned. "...Exactly." School ended beneath a sky heavy with rainclouds. Students slowly emptied the hallways. One by one. Until only silence remained. Sera stood before her unfinished painting in the art room. Sunlight reflected across the painted river. Professor Hayes smiled proudly. "You're improving much faster than I expected." Sera smiled shyly. "I still have a lot to learn." "You always will." The older woman picked up her bag. "I have a faculty meeting." "Lock the room before you leave." "I will." The door clicked shut. Sera was alone. She dipped her brush into pale blue paint. Completely unaware... That another pair of eyes was watching from outside the narrow window. Lily. She smiled faintly. Then turned away. "Let's begin." An hour later... Sera packed her brushes. She hummed softly. For the first time in years... She felt peaceful. She reached for the light switch. Then paused. "...Hm?" The art room door... Was slightly open. She was certain she'd closed it. A strange feeling settled in her chest. She slowly walked toward her easel. One step. Another. Then- Her breathing stopped. Paint dripped slowly onto the wooden floor. Blue. Red. Black. Long gashes ripped through the center of her canvas. The river she had spent days bringing back to life... Had been slashed beyond repair. Her paint jars lay shattered. Brushes snapped in half. Silence filled the room. Sera couldn't move. Couldn't speak. She simply stared. Behind the hallway corner... Hidden from sight... A pair of calm eyes watched her frozen figure. Lily Everhart smiled. "...Checkmate." ...
