Spotlights illuminated the cabin cruisers moored a few yards from the window. A gray cat strolled down the gangplank from the rocky embankment to the wooden pier. It looked extremely well fed. It waved its tail as if it were setting off on an after-dark cruise around the bay. “You promised you’d tell me. I know why I love you. Because you’re beautiful and kind and because you made me alive. All the years I was like a dead man. Go to work, process cases, go home, eat dinner, watch TV, go to sleep. It wasn’t life. Everybody I knew was just like me. My world was the size of a soccer field. You made me alive. But what did I give you?”
