CHAPTER NINELindsey phoned Lawton Crump’s house from the lobby of the Parc Oakland. Mrs. Crump answered the phone and insisted on knowing Lindsey’s identity and business before she’d put him through to her husband. When Crump took the call he said, “You’ll forgive my wife. She gets protective. And after what happened to that poor fellow at the airport, I’m afraid I’ve been a little bit upset myself.” Lindsey said, “I understand. If I could have just a bit of your time, though.…” He left it there. Crump said, “All right. I presume you have credentials to prove your bona fides?” “Of course.” It was a relief to drive from Oakland to San Jose out of rush hour. The freeway passed between the Coliseum and the airport and Lindsey flashed on the image of a bomber heading for the sports stadiu
