CHAPTER TWELVEThe day’s filming ended before sundown, and a chosen few were permitted onto the field to inspect the airplanes. Lindsey recognized the TV crews and the newspaper professionals by their gear and their nonchalance. Another half-dozen amateurs were included, each one clutching a camcorder or still camera. They raced to the aircraft, jockeyed for position, scurried from plane to plane like a nest of ants confused by the sudden arrival of a honey rainstorm. Ina Chandler appeared and laid her hand on Lawton Crump’s arm. “You’re welcome on the field, Lawton. We’ll have you set up for press interviews in a little while.” Crump said, “I’ll try and give ’em what they need. Now, yes, I think I’ll go take a peep. I want to see if that’s actually Bessie or just a reasonable facsimile.
