Chapter 1

Laura’s POV. The rumble of the accelerating train gradually rattled me awake. When I opened my eyes, I winced because I felt a severe ache in my back, and the reason was that I was lying on the floor of the train. The train was carrying empty boxes, which I assumed would be dropped to the town’s capital. I was shivering and covered in cold sweat. I wiped some sweat off my forehead and felt an instant headache. I casted a glance at Cordelia, who I’m certain was the person responsible as to why I was lying on the floor. I knew she was aware of my gaze even though she was engrossed in her laptop. It was a good thing she was here. She most likely threatened her husband again in order to escape from her own home. “Be grateful that I found you, or you might have died in the cold in that forest,” she said, as if what she did was a huge help, so I smirked and sat down next to her, peeking at what she was doing on her laptop. She was monitoring the perimeter of the Crimson Pack, which was ruled by the Alpha King. We belonged to this pack under his reign. “What do you mean I could have died from the cold? Are you crazy? We are wolves!” I rebutted. All she did was laugh and flip her hair to the left. “By the way, what are you doing there? Fortunately, your tracking device is working and I found you right away.” I was pleased to know she was at least worried about me. After all, since the two got married with their fated mates, they could no longer join in the field. Portia was an informant and planner, while Cordelia was computer literate and served as the pack’s guardian. “I accepted it,” I said meekly, causing her to enlarge her eyes. Her face was filled with both relief and concern. “Really?” It was almost a whisper. It was as if she was trying to limit, but was anticipating how I would react. I gave her a sour look. I noticed the sun was about to rise when I peered out the window. I must have slept for a long time. “Leia asked me for a favor, and I’m sick of Conan as well. I had to put up with his cruelty all of the time. I gave him a chance to change his mind, but he chose power over me. He made up his mind, and I have no control over it.” I gasped in an attempt to suppress the conflicting emotions coursing through my cell. “It’s time to move on, Laura. Let go of what is heavy within you.” I nodded, agreeing with her. “I had feelings for him over the years. And now, I’ve decided to let him go. It’s time to get over him.” “The Moon Goddess has a plan for you.” I shook my head defensively and rolled my eyes. “No, thank you. She might buy it for something worse.” She burst out laughing as her eyes enlarged, and she immediately covered her mouth when she realized we were inside the train, which was illegal. She’s so cheap. She didn’t even take a cab! Crimson Pack Royal Council Court. I read the sign above the large building I was about to enter. I scanned the entire vicinity first before going inside. Tip number one, always look around you. You never know if someone is secretly watching you and determining your next move, especially in my situation. I have to be careful not to be handcuffed because if I was, I would be unable to guard properly as the Alpha King’s protector. Protectors, like myself, have been trained since we were children. This responsibility was bequeathed to us by our parents. It was passed down to future generations. The Royal Council also selects those who are capable of hiding from the keen senses of the Alpha King and Royal Family in order to efficiently ensure their safety. I bowed when I came across General Largus in the hallway. He plastered a half-smile on his face. “How’s life so far, Laura?” “Everything’s fine, I guess, General,” I answered in a polite manner. He’s been by my side since day one. He was like a father figure to me. I have a lot of trust in him because he has everything. Kindness, talent, and knowledge. My response elicited a chuckle from him. He shook his head and messed up my hair, which I quickly jerked away from his grasp. I scowled because he does it every single time. It’s difficult to fix my hair! “As expected from you, Laura, your reaction remained consistent. I’ll be off first because I still have a lot of work to do. I’ll see you around,” he said before waving goodbye and leaving. After our conversation, I went to Ma’am Macy’s office. She’s the commander who gives us orders. Before entering, I knocked on the door and found her reading a book. Doesn’t she feel dizzy from always reading calculus or an encyclopedia? “Sit down, Laura,” she said and removed her glasses before facing me. Commander Macy, like me, is half werewolf and half witch. The only difference is that she possesses the ability to heal, which she inherited from her dwarf grandmother. Basically, she’s a half werewolf, a witch, and a healer. Healers are called dwarfs because they are the only ones who have the power to heal. “I summoned you here because the Alpha King’s birthday is approaching.” I pressed my lips together and listened to her. I was informed that his birthday is around the corner. Who wouldn’t? Everyone has been celebrating his birthday for more than a year. “And?” I questioned. “According to my sources, Portia also confirmed just this morning that rouges will be gate-crashing on Saturday,” she went on. “I want you to be nearby. We know he can defend himself, but we need to be more cautious. You’re probably aware of what will occur if something bad happens to him.” I immediately understood what she meant. If those people succeed in killing the Alpha King, it will cause a commotion and no one will be able to stop it. The members of the pack will be out of order, and they may end up executing one another. I gave her a nod before standing up. “I’m leaving,” I said, and she simply nodded back before returning her concentration to her book. I was about to leave the office when she spoke up again, causing me to freeze in place. “And one more thing, Alpha Damian will choose his mate this upcoming Saturday…” In an instant, I turned to face her in shock as she mentioned it. The Alpha King will choose his mate at last?! “Really?!” I asked shockingly. I was surprised, despite the fact that it was nothing out of the ordinary. I mean, we could always have a mate if the Moon Goddess wills it. But perhaps it was because we were talking about the Alpha King, who isn’t your average person. This was the first time I’d heard that he was going to pick his mate in all of my years of serving him. She beamed at my dumbfounded reaction before nodding. “I had the same reaction at first, but yes! Finally, we’re going to have a queen in our pack!” I nodded, delighted at the prospect of having a queen in our midst. A Luna is essential in a pack. This would reassure pack members that they will have an heir, and the pack would be stronger with Luna. I’m thrilled to meet her…
