Laura’s POV.
“A man in a black coat, 12 o’clock.”
I inspected the surroundings when Cordelia sent me an alert signal. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a man dressed in black and wearing a mask.
He was acting furtively, as though he thought his every move was being watched. It was suspicious, and I suspected he was planning something for today’s feast. The royal protectors and guards were on stand-by for the Royal Family’s protection.
The former king will arrive along with the former Luna, as well as the Alpha King’s brother Prince Draco and sister Princess Diana. They used to go home on the King’s birthday. As a result, almost all members of the Crimson Pack want to come here to witness the meeting of the most powerful family in Alvinia.
In the western world, Alvinia is a large continent. It is divided into four parts. Dwarfs and healers live in Gardenia. The Fire Lake serves as the fortress of the Vampires. Skyrim is the home of witches and other creatures with basic elemental powers, and is located in the mountain region where the clouds are so low that you can almost reach the sky. I’ve been there before, and the place has captivated me. Last but not least is the Crescent Capital, where werewolves reside.
“And now, the most anticipated of all…”
I heard the banquet host speak on stage, but I didn’t take my eyes off the man or bat an eye. I couldn’t afford to lose sight of him.
“Werewolves, witches, healers, and other creatures! The moment we’ve all been waiting for: the Royal Family’s reunion!”
I noticed the man leaving after hearing the declaration. Supposing he would summon his allies to cause trouble, I groped for the dagger in my holster and started walking to follow him.
“Where are you going, Laura?!” I could hear Cordelia’s uneasiness through the earpiece.
“I’ll follow him,” I whispered.
“What?! No! Just watch over the Alpha King. Someone has been assigned for that,” she insisted, but I didn’t listen. Not that I don’t trust our colleagues, but I’d better catch him myself.
“Relax. I got this, Cordelia–”
I ceased when I smelled a coffee mint scent out of the blue. It has a strong fragrance. My eyes came out of socket and my voice caught in my throat when I realized the reason why.
Don’t tell me you’re giving me a second mate, Moon Goddess? Only two days have passed since I accepted Conan’s rejection!
I cast a cautious glance around. I forgot about my intention to chase the man because I was taken aback by the epiphany. My entire body shuddered as my brain struggled to comprehend what was going on. My heart started a marathon race.
The atmosphere was upbeat, and everyone was having a good time. Their lips were painted with smiles, whereas mine was the polar opposite. Until my gaze was drawn to the front.
My eyes were fixated on the handsome man from a distance. His brow was furrowed, and his eyes were moving mischievously, as if he was looking for someone. Suddenly, he raised his head and his gentle eyes locked with mine. My mouth half-opened as my heart throbbed loudly.
It can’t be…
Overwhelmed and caught off guard, I backed away, oblivious to the person behind me. I bumped into a woman and dropped the tray of wine she was holding, which caused everyone’s attention to land on me, including him.
The look of surprise was evident on the man’s face. Then, his brows drew down in a scowl, as if irritated when he noticed that I was slowly taking a calculated stealth step backward.
His eyes were ablaze, and he breathed hard through his mouth. He looked furious and hot, and I had no idea if he was going to hit me or screw me. All I knew was that both would be violent.
I was about to run, but he was even faster in the air that reached in front of me. I saw the darkness in his eyes. He clenched his jaw, and I could tell he was annoyed for reasons I don’t know.
“Where are you going, lady?”
I stared down at my arm he was holding. When our skin touched, I felt electricity emitted from my body. It sent shivers into my spine. The sensations of spark and connection were all too familiar. I gulped not because I was afraid of him, but because of what would happen.
How come my second mate is the Alpha King?
Werewolves recognize their mate the instant they lay eyes on him or her. When they catch the one of a kind scent of their mate, their wolf goes crazy, as I am experiencing. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d end up being his mate.
“Let go,” I balked, remembering that I still had a job.
The corner of his mouth quirked up. “Feisty, but not enough to scare me. Come with me.”
I was infuriated by the way he spoke to me, as if I were his servant. I yanked my arm violently away from his grasp.
I could see the bafflement in the eyes of those present, and their gossip about what was going on did not escape my hearing. I didn’t care about them, as long as I had to get stuck to chase the man I was aiming to capture. The situation is already difficult, especially given the presence of the entire Royal Family.
“No,” I held firm and walked past him.
I stepped away when the Royal Guards blocked me in an instant. I knew he used his mind to order his people to keep me from leaving.
“What’s happening, Laura?” Cordelia asked worriedly, but I didn’t answer her query.
I jumped up and kicked them, knocking them down in a matter of seconds. My every move was fast when I saw them try to come up to me and grab me.
I threw powerful jabs and kicked all of them with all my strength. And because I am not an ordinary warrior, they were defeated one by one and collapsed unconscious to the ground.
The remaining Royal Guards were terrified of approaching me and had terrified eyes. I wiped the beads of sweat from my face with my arm before confronting the Alpha once more.
“Let me go,” I appealed in a calm voice.
I was holding back not to erupt. He looked me in the eyes before slipping his hands into his pocket and breathing a burdensome sigh.
“Will you come back?”
My eyes were focused solely on him because of his question. He sounded as if he was hoping for me to give him the answer he desired to hear.
“Do you want me to come back?” I asked back.
Without batting an eyelash, he answered, “I’ve been waiting for you for nearly half of my life. You already know the answer.”
“Laura, the Royal Guards are fighting in the northern part of the Moon Pack! They need you there.” I heard Cordelia apprise me.
I merely nodded and did not respond. I’m positive she noticed my signal.
“Faster, Laura!”
“The clock is ticking. I want an answer.”
It was at this point that I transferred my focus to the Alpha King. His eyes held something so raw that my mind went blank. His sharp features added an odd magnetism to his appearance.
“I’ll try…” that was all I could say before hurrying away and lurking behind the tree.
I heaved a long sigh and called out my wolf. “Are you ready to fight?”
“Is he our second mate, Laura?!” She was bursting at the seams with excitement.
My head snapped up to the sky to observe the moon. “I don’t know why the Moon Goddess gave this to me, but we have a fight to go to. Are you happy about this?”
Why did I ask such a simple question? Of course, the answer was yes because I could sense Leia’s excitement.
“Why not? He’s hot as hell!”
“Oh, don’t be such a flirtatious wolf, Leia!”
I embraced my fury, which ran deep within my veins and drove me to become a ferocious beast. My eyes changed as I transformed into a wolf. Leia has a dark reddish-brown color with red sapphire eyes. She laughed and stuck out her tongue. I, in turn, began running north.
