Laura’s POV.
My eyes turned lethal. I sharpened my senses and dashed into the field. I bit a rogue who came rushing towards me. It cried out in pain, but I never gave it the chance to retaliate. I was ruthless and broke its neck.
Then I dashed to the left, colliding with a black wolf on the verge of biting me from behind. The wolf groaned in suffering and after a moment or two of hovering between life and death, crumpled and died.
I vaulted and lurched in the air to avoid the metal arrows coming at me like a whirlwind. I saw rouges who were in human form aiming at us. Rouges werewolves that have either been kicked out of their pack or left on their own free will to live in the wild. They have long fur, and they also have a bad odor radiating from their bodies. They can be either good or bad.
I hastened behind a tree and changed my form. I put on my leather outfit and boots before climbing the tall trees and targeting the enemies. They tried to hit me, but my reflexes were fast. I landed smoothly and kicked one of the rogues to the side. It dropped to the ground with a thud.
I strangled another who tried to attack me and pressed my razor sharp claws against its neck. I punched the one in my right and I twisted its neck ruthlessly.
I was dripping with sweat when the other Royal Guards arrived. I’m certain Cordelia has informed them that we need backup. The number of rogues lashing out was unusual today. They were desperate to kill the Alpha King. Well, not on my watch, not now that I have a special bond with him, even if I’m not sure what to do.
With so much on my mind, I was spacing out and unaware of a rogue flying at me, and he was able to stab me in the stomach. My mouth opened wide. My hands were sweating and trembling. The shock was almost immediate. It took a few minutes before the piercing pain made itself known. Everything was happening at once, and the hot blood gushed from the gash, as if my heart was trying to pump it out of my body.
Shit! A metal blade…
I was filled with burning ire. Before he could stab me again, I slaughtered the remaining one by ripping his head off at once, which caused a sickening crack.
“Laura!”
I winced before facing Cordelia. A hint of concern was visible on her face as she took a look at my flesh wound. The blood had not stopped leaking, and the thick fluid was neither warmer nor cooler than my own skin. The blade was not ordinary. It left me in a bad state.
“I-I’m okay…”
She shook her head, scared to death. “I don’t think so, Laura. That blade is a poison blade!”
I inspected the weapon he used to stab me. For a fighter like me, who is constantly put in situations like this, this is nothing new. But why do I feel weak? Perhaps it was the poison’s effect, though it will soon heal and fade away because Cordelia will never let me die.
Damn!
Cordelia held me up so I wouldn’t fall because the poison has begun to make an impact on my body. Over time, my breathing became unsteady, and all I could remember before losing consciousness was that my vision went fuzzy and black.
What a bad day!
***
My head spun with dizziness when I opened my eyes and tried to sit bolt upright. As I recalled what had happened earlier, I immediately felt a sharp pain in my stomach.
“I hate that blade!” I muttered a silent curse, then grimaced as all the pain of my body came rushing back to me at once.
“Well, unfortunately, the metal blade loves you.”
Leia’s sarcastic language made me mentally roll my eyes. I released a frustrated sigh and frowned when I found myself somewhere unfamiliar.
“Where are we, Leia?” I asked my wolf as I sat up slowly on the big bed.
The mattress was soft and the room exuded elegance and power. The place gave off an intimidating vibe, as if I were inside the Royal Kingdom.
“I have no idea. Didn’t we just wake up?”
I wanted to be annoyed by her answer, but she has a valid point. I was about to get up to find out where I was when the door creaked open, revealing Cordelia’s worried face as if she had gone insane. She looked like a mess.
When she noticed I was awake, she rushed over to my direction, her eyes widening as she checked on me.
“Are you okay?” she asked in a flustered voice.
My forehead wrinkled in confusion. “Why do you look so worried? This isn’t the first time I’ve been stabbed with a poisonous metal blade.”
She sat across the bed on the couch, staring at me. She pinched my arm and rolled her eyes.
“Ouch! What is your problem?!” I hissed, darting her a death glare.
“By the moon, Laura! I almost had a heart attack because the Alpha King was so angry yesterday!”
My brow arched. “Why would he be angry?”
She stopped and gawked at me in utter disbelief, as if I was stupid for asking her a question with an easy answer. What exactly is it? I couldn’t seem to figure her out.
She forced her gaping mouth closed. “You’re crazy! You didn’t tell me you were the Alpha King’s mate!”
That’s when everything that happened last night sank into me. I squeezed my eyes shut and leaned back on the bed board, which I regretted because my wound was stinging. I’m so pissed off! If it had been a regular knife that had stabbed me, I would have recovered quickly, but it wasn’t.
“I don’t know why the Moon Goddess did this, Cordelia. I’m perplexed, too. Because why would she suddenly give me another mate? I just got rejected by Conan a few days ago. Is this normal? It wasn’t even a mating ball yesterday, was it? Why is this so?” I asked.
I was beyond confused. I have a lot of questions in my mind, and finding the answer to all of them one by one is much harder than operating a dangerous job. She scratched her head and I face-palmed. Obviously, she has nothing to say to me because she is also clueless.
“Maybe the Moon Goddess was just waiting for you to accept Conan’s rejection because she has something in store for you.”
“Argh! With so many werewolves, why him? Why does it have to be him?!” I grumbled.
“What’s the problem with having the Alpha King as your mate? He’s handsome, powerful and much better than Conan. Don’t you want to take the opportunity to make Conan realize what he wasted?”
I turned to Cordelia after giving it some thought. She’s right. With all the pain I’ve been through because of Conan, perhaps the Moon Goddess wants me to prove my worth.
Will I be happy this time?
“But, Laura, don’t use him, okay?”
My brow furrowed a little as she spoke. Of course, I won’t take advantage of the Alpha King. I couldn’t help but stare daggers at her.
Does she like my mate?
“He’s mine…” I affirmed, which made her eyes grow wider.
“What?! Stop being ridiculous! I’m married! What I meant to say was, don’t use him to get your vengeance. Get to know each other. After all, he is your second mate,” Cordelia made clear, tapping me on the shoulder. “I know you, Laura. You’ve lost faith in the concept of love because of Conan, but at the very least, try to get to know the Alpha. And besides, I’m happy that our pack already has its Luna, and it is you.”
Then, she smiled at me. I raised my eyes to her and smiled back. She’s a treasure. She’s like a sister to me.
“You are deserving of the throne. Our pack is in need of a strong queen like you. You will be able to keep a better watch on him because you will always be with him.”
“I will beat him. Let’s see his fighting spirit.”
My heart was filled with determination. We both guffawed. Only when the door opened again and the man with the mesmerizing pair of brown eyes entered, followed by the Royal Family, did the two of us fall silent.
“Hello there, sister-in-law.”
I had a tangy expression on my face, grimacing at the way Princess Diana addressed me.
I don’t like it.
