Chapter 5

1666 Words
Laura’s POV. “Laura!” I lowered the book I was reading when I saw Cordelia come running up to me. She was speaking on the phone with whoever was on the other end of the line. She handed it to me when she reached me. I frowned as I looked down at her outstretched hand. Incredulous, I asked, “What am I going to do with this?” She let out an exasperated sigh. “Eat it.” “Tsk!” “Portia wants to talk to you.” My eyes widened, and I immediately handed the phone back to her. Portia and Cordelia are similar, especially when it comes to personality. “Answer it.” I don’t want to! I shook my head and squinted my eyes in apathetic disgust, but she only shrugged her shoulders and passed it back to me, as if to say there was nothing I could do about it. As I expected, I was unable to do anything, so I returned the phone to my ear and answered the call. “Hey, Laura!” I yanked the phone away after hearing Portia’s high-pitched tone. Her voice was so loud it almost made me lose my hearing. How could her husband stand it? “What?” I greeted her rudely, but because she was used to me treating her that way, she ignored it and responded with a giggle. “You’re one beautiful and lucky woman! I’m shocked to find out that the Moon Goddess blessed you with a very hot mate!” Cordelia must have told her about it. I wouldn’t be surprised given her big mouth. Speaking of whom, I gave her a menacing look. She apologized with a peace sign and awkwardly smiled while listening to us. “What’s your plan? I’d like to see you and gain more information about the two of you. Did you already do the mating process? Girl, try him out!” This is what I am talking about. Not that I don’t want to talk to her, but you won’t get it if you don’t know her. I’m not sure why she speaks like this or runs her mouth without a filter. I couldn’t remember off the top of my head how I ended up being friends with her. “Watch your mouth, Portia! Your husband may overhear you!” I chastised her. Her husband was too over possessive of her, as if she were the most beautiful woman in the world. I wasn’t sure whether Portia had charmed him or what. The last time Max was jealous, he broke the neck of the man he was jealous of. She chortled in a vivacious voice. “Oh, he loves my mouth.” My eyes widened in shock and horror at the despicable words she babbled. Cordelia beamed and screeched. I couldn’t believe I’m friends with these two. “Cut it out, Portia, or else I’ll hang up!” “All right, I’ll stop. Relax, Chan,” she stopped me from hanging up. “So, let’s go back to the conversation. What is your plan?” I gasped for air as I muddled over what to do with a troubled expression on my face. “I don’t know. I’ll just go with the flow, I guess.” “You sounded uninterested. Don’t you like him?” I glanced at Cordelia who was also waiting for my answer. I bet she has been itching to ask me the same question, but hasn’t had the chance to do so. “It’s not that I don’t like him, but perhaps I’m just not ready for him yet,” I clarified. “So, you’re saying you want to reject him?” I let out a wistful sigh. “I do want to reject him–” But my mind won’t let me… “I won’t let you!” I jumped in surprise when I recognized the owner of that dangerous shout. I immediately turned to face the man behind Cordelia and me. And there he was, standing and topless. He was drenched in sweat because I had heard he was on the hunt for rogues who had crossed the border. Beside him was his Beta Troy, Gamma Finn, and the ten pack warriors. I could distinguish their terror when they looked at him. I was shocked as well. I wasn’t done speaking yet. I was about to explain to him, but his speed caused me to trail off. I didn’t realize we had reached his room. This is my second time inside his bedroom because I didn’t agree with the idea of the two of us sharing a bed. He closed the door and pinned me against the wall. I felt a little nervous because I could see the anger in his eyes and his wolf’s eye color, which was similar to mine. I winced as he held my jaw and lifted me a little. Although it wasn’t intense, I could feel the tightness. I could tell he was trying to hold himself from hurting me. “I will never allow you to reject me. I didn’t wait for so long just to blow this opportunity,” he berated. “Wait, let me go!” His grip on me was firm, and he was already enraged before hearing the rest of what I was going to say. “Don’t you dare, Laura Harlow! You’re not going to like me.” I looked into his fiery eyes. I knew that no matter what I explained, he wouldn’t listen to me. He was pretty angry. I exhaled through my nose. “I won’t. I promise.” He eyed me a skeptical look, and the flames in his eyes faded away. He slowly released me and presented me to him while looking at me intently. I didn’t avoid his gaze. Maybe if it had been other wolves, they would have been scared, but not me. Even if I am not his mate, I don’t think I’ll be scared of him. I’m not afraid of anyone or anything. A person who has nothing to lose has no fear. “Don’t say that again, understood?” I sat on the bed and showed agreement to his will. He was leaning against the door, which captured my attention. My forehead wrinkled as I noticed he still didn’t have a t-shirt on. “Get dressed! You might catch a cold,” I told him. He raised two eyebrows and tilted his head to the side, staring at me with a look between mockery and admiration. “Thanks for your concern, honey, but I won’t die easily from that.” “Suit yourself,” I said nonchalantly. “Don’t you like what you see? What do you prefer? Topless or naked?” he quipped. “Naked.” My cheeks turned red when I heard Leia’s answer. She’s so shameless! “What the heck? You’re embarrassing, Leia!” I chided. Damian let out a delicate chuckle. “Oh, your little wolf wants me naked.” “Shut the f**k up!” “Don’t use that F word on me, honey. You might regret it.” I stood up and charged at him without his notice. I picked up the first thing I touched on the table and hurled it at him with full force, but he sensed it and caught it with his hand before it reached him. I tried blowing a fist and kicking him, but he easily avoided them. I was especially infuriated because my blows weren’t hitting him. He was excellent at dodging. Instead of fighting back, he blocked my punches and swift kicks. “Don’t you know that most people find me intimidating?” His lips formed a condescending smirk. “I can see that, but what they find intimidating, I find endearing.” For a fraction of a second, he was distracted by the tiny gap between us. I used his absentmindedness to my advantage and locked his head in my arms, but he unshackled and twisted our position. He clutched my hands, and with main strength, he spun me around and pinned me against the wall. I struggled in vain, but he was too strong for me to beat. I was stunned into silence when he pulled my waist close to him, and then grinned lopsidedly. “I didn’t know you’re prettier up close…” “Stop pissing me off, you jerk!” I shouted at him and gathered all my strength to break free of his hold by striking him once more. He was sneering the entire time while parrying my attacks, which enraged me even more. With each defense of him, I studied his movement. And since I’m one of the pack’s best protectors, I learned fast and caught up with his fighting style right away. Without giving any hints, I altered my counter-thrust and kicked him in the chest. He didn’t see it coming and flew off the balcony. My jaw tightened as I looked down to where he had fallen, because he seemed to enjoy what I was doing. I clenched my fists. This arrogant King must learn a lesson! I could see the uproar among the pack members as they were inert watching us. Oh, the chaos hasn’t even begun. This Alpha King is testing my patience, and I’m starting to lose it. I won’t let him win. “Then show me what you’ve got, honey,” he teased in my mind. I took off the jacket I was wearing and leaped to the balcony. I was fuming mad and eager to crush him into pieces, as evidenced by the look of my eyes. I gnashed my teeth. “You’ll regret this!” “I want to see you try,” he set me up for a challenge before sprinting into the woods. I cracked my fingers. “Oh, so you want me to hunt you?” “Catch me if you can…”
