Chapter 6

Laura’s POV. His every move was fast, but since I am not an ordinary female wolf, I was able to keep up with him. I’ve been doing this for quite some time. This wasn’t the first time I have followed him; the only difference is that he already knows me. I admit that if you were just another wolf, you might have a hard time catching up to him. His speed was no joke, and it was something not to be underestimated. “Come on, honey,” he provoked me further and sped up the run. My pace increased as well, desperate to get him. “Just wait until I get you! You’re dead meat!” I posed a threat to him, but he only laughed at me. The fact that I had never heard him laugh before initially took me by surprise, but eventually, I came to my senses and started chasing after him again. I didn’t realize we had passed the Crimson Pack’s boundary. We’re heading to Skyrim at the moment. Due to our speed, we were able to view the households of Skyrim in less than a few minutes. I thought he was going there, but he turned right instead. He made his way to the Black Forest. I couldn’t help but halt and frown. Going there is dangerous because there are many wild animals all over the surroundings. Why would he go there? He’s as stubborn as a mule! I sped up to reach him because I was anxious something bad would happen to him. Let us not forget that it is my job to protect him at all costs. I paused in the middle of the forest when I wasn’t able to sense or smell him any longer. I could no longer detect the coffee mint scent he had because of the foul odor of the dead animals nearby. “You, jerk! Where are you?!” I screamed aloud, and it echoed throughout the place. Doesn’t he know how unsafe it is here? He’s strong and capable of handling himself, but that doesn’t mean he would be careless with his actions. That’s the core reason why he needs protectors because of his recklessness. I felt a presence approaching from behind me, so I instinctively turned around and booted whoever it was. He nudged my foot, which caused me to whirl in the air. He caught me with his arms just as I was near to hitting the ground. As soon as I recovered from the shock, I glared at him and smacked his arm. “Are you out of your mind?! You know it’s dangerous here!” I thundered at him. He pressed his lips together and shrugged his shoulders. I tried to get down from his lift, but he did not let me and instead tightened his grip on me. “Where will we go? Let’s get out of here,” I nagged when I noticed him not taking the path to the exit, but rather into the forest. “Hey!” He wasn’t saying anything, which angered me even more. He flashed a cold gander at me before returning his attention to the front again. I’ve warned him multiple times, but to no avail. He never listens. For a leader of a pack, he’s indeed a hard-headed Alpha. “Damian!” “I’ll show you something. Don’t move,” he instructed. I felt like a submissive dog who complied with her master. But then, I remembered he was carrying me. All I could do was stay still because I didn’t want to fall. “What do I need to see?” I asked out of curiosity, but he never opened his mouth to answer me again. Are his words precious? I scowled. He didn’t want to waste his saliva as if it was gold. I smirked and raised an eyebrow before looking ahead. I couldn’t help but be puzzled, but I kept quiet and made myself look around. I blinked in startle when he lowered his back and put me down. “What now?” I stood before him, arms akimbo. He supported my shoulders and presented me forward. I was about to make a fuss because I’ve observed we’ve been having a lot of skin contact lately. However, I was unable to bring it up because the mesmerizing scenery of the waterfalls in the middle of two high mountains in front of me took my breath away. It emitted a purple glow. “That’s the Moon Falls…” My jaw went slack as my lips twitched at the same time. With an awestruck expression on my face, I turned to face him. “The Moon Falls?!” I blurted out. “But I thought it was only a legend?” I thought these waterfalls were not real. They claim that you can ask for whatever you want most in this place, and it will be granted. “You can see it with your own eyes. It does exist.” “Does the Royal Family know about this? Considering that everyone thought it was just a legend,” I asked, mystified. He shook his head. “Only the two of us know about it.” “Why? Do you come here often?” He nodded, which caused me to frown and began overthinking. Why am I unaware of his whereabouts when I’m always keeping track of him? He chortled, a greasy line of ill-humored contempt played with the corner of his lips. I bit my tongue and released a grudgeful sigh. This Alpha King is getting under my skin! He read my mind again. “You won’t know because I come here at midnight. I know I have a protector, that’s why I sneak away every night when you’re sleeping.” I punched him on the shoulder. “What?! You’ve gone insane!” He chuckled and patted his hand beside him, motioning for me to sit there, which I did when l felt exhausted and numb from walking and standing for so long. “What are you doing here every night?” He stared into my eyes. “I’m wishing for the Moon Goddess to give me a Luna.” “I’m not your second mate?!” I exclaimed in surprise. I was rendered speechless as I gaped at him for an entire minute. It was impossible that he didn’t have a single mate even once by the time he reached the age of twenty-one. There are some cases where the other wolf has to wait for a long time after reaching their supposed age before finding their mate, but the wolf spirits have a way of bringing two together no matter how far apart they are. “How is that possible?” I wondered aloud. He responded with a shrug of his shoulders. I shuddered when he leaned on me, but I didn’t push him away. My mind, at least, convinced me not to. “Do you know what it feels like to grow old alone?” His question caused me to remain silent for the following few seconds. This time, I tried to restrain him from analyzing me. Yes, and it’s because of you. “I desperately want to have a mate, that’s why I sought out this hidden paradise,” he continued. “And you got tired of waiting? Because the general told me that you’ll choose a mate on your birthday.” I don’t know if I hid my bitterness, but whatever. “I thought it was my fate to not have a soulmate. And besides, my pack needs a Luna. We can’t afford to spend another century waiting.” A hundred years? Is Cordelia correct? That the Moon Goddess was only waiting for me to give up on Conan? If that’s the case, I’ve squandered a lot of time. “I’m sorry…” He sat upright and glanced over at me. “Why?” “It’s my fault. My first mate isn’t you.” I witnessed the surprise pass through his eyes, but it also vanished immediately. “Who is he?” he muttered a question under his breath, but my hearing was sensitive enough to hear it. I peered at the waterfalls to avoid his gaze. I felt guilty because, I’ll be honest, it’s not easy to forget the past. “He’s your cousin, Damian Wolfgang Hunter.” “Do you mean, Conan?” He made a guess, and I nodded to confirm his hunch. “I thought his mate was Louvel’s first born?” At this moment, I met his gaze and fought it. I want him to know my pain, my grief, and my rage. “He chose power over me. He valued it more than his mate.” His brow furrowed in befuddlement. “Why? He’s already a powerful man.” “Perhaps he wants to be greater than you?” I reckoned because that’s the only reason that makes sense to me. He didn’t utter a word for a matter of seconds before getting a grip and deciding to resume speaking. “So, are you still into him? Haven’t you gotten over him yet? Are you going to reject me?” he asked, his voice unable to cover up his coldness. I was admiring the view when there he was, stealing a glance at me. It took me a while to notice, but when I did, I felt a strange feeling. For a moment or two, there was silence. I zoned out and everything blurred except his face. We made intense eye contact and no one broke it, as if we were playing a game of no blinking. I swallowed and finally mustered the courage to talk. “Do you want me to?” “No.” I smiled at him. “Then, I won’t…”
