Chapter 4

Laura’s POV. I turned my head sideways to avoid looking straight ahead as I felt their stares. Silence swallowed the room and the air was stagnant. Being surrounded by the Royal Family suffocates me and makes me uncomfortable, as if every move I make was being scrutinized. “Are you feeling better?” My eyes darted to the Alpha King when he asked me. It was awkward. They were all looking at us, as if they were watching a melodramatic scene from a movie. I didn’t say anything and just stared at him. My wolf giggled. “You activated your b***h mode again.” “All right, so how do we respond to his question? Their attention is fixed on me,” I spoke back to Leia, seeking sanity because I was going nuts. “Don’t worry, they won’t judge you.” I face-palmed after hearing another deep yet soft voice. So, there you have it. He could read my mind. I had forgotten about the mind-link that true mates can develop after the mating call. “Yes, I can.” I was caught off guard when that voice entered my mind, but I didn’t look at him. I couldn’t believe this was happening. “Are you okay?” he asked again using our mind link. Every mate has the ability to read and communicate with them through telepathy. When you are the Alpha, you can talk to your pack members even from a long-range, but they can’t read your mind because only your mate can do that. In my current state, I can’t read his mind yet because he’s not a typical wolf. We must first go through the mating process, which includes s****l intercourse to obtain each other’s ability. After that, we can share the power of each other. Mating will strengthen your bond, and you will no longer be able to reject your mate. “That’s a lot of knowledge, mate.” I gave him a stern look. “This is unfair! You can read my mind, but I can’t read yours!” He shrugged his shoulders, looked into my eyes and mouthed, “We can do the mating process if you want.” My nose flared up in rage at what I heard, especially when he flashed a flirtatious wink to tease me even more. Pervert! I grabbed the pillow from the bed next to me and threw it in his face. His family sighed. The Alpha King shook his head and put the pillow back on my side, as if nothing had happened. “Given how she’s still so savage, I’m guessing she’s okay,” he said with a taunting grin on his face before exiting the room. “Let’s talk after you’ve gotten some rest.” I agreed in response when Alpha Damian’ mother spoke. His father nodded at me and went out with his wife. His brother and sister waved at me before shutting the door. After they all left, I turned to Cordelia, who had big eyes. With a delighted expression, she clung to my arm. “What did he say, and why are you blushing?” she asked, but I ignored her question and rolled over to hide under the blanket. “Hey!” “Stop it, Cordelia! Get out and don’t disturb my peace! I’m resting,” I upbraided. She’s always poking her nose into other people’s business, and she needs to get rid of that habit. She burst out laughing at me. Perhaps she figured I was annoyed and embarrassed. “Oh, come on, Laura! Spill the beans!” I glowered. “You’re so nosy!” *** After wasting an hour of pretending to be asleep, I left the room to explore the Royal Kingdom. I still have a duty to fulfill, and that is to keep the King safe. I dressed up by wearing black leggings and a black top paired with a leather coat. I tied my hair in a bun and put on some light makeup to look presentable. Of course, even if I’m just a shadow and protector, I should still be beautiful. I was in awe of the Royal Family’s mansion. The structure is old, but it has retained its elegance and screamed worth millions, not to mention its classy style. I noticed the pack warriors training in the vast land. Some were running into the forest, some were practicing the use of weapons, and others were having a duel in their wolf form. On the other side, there were innocent kids observing them. Their eyes glistened, astounded by what they were witnessing. Crimson Pack Warrior isn’t a common pack. They are strong and have expertise in training. This is necessary because the whole continent needs to be guarded. Striding the hallway, many pack warriors were glancing at me. I was taken aback when they bowed to me at once. I didn’t know what to do, so I bowed as well. I never planned any of this. The recognition and respect. On my walk, I happened upon the location where the warriors were training in archery. I was intrigued because I hadn’t used a bow and arrow in a long time. I approached them and asked for the equipment, which they handed to me right away. They seemed to be in a state of panic. “Good morning, Luna,” one of the warriors greeted me. I raised an eyebrow as I aimed for the target. Luna? Oh, yeah, they know. “Good morning,” I greeted back before releasing the arrow. It hit the bullseye. I’m still not missing out. My lips curved into a sweet smile when I heard them applaud. I’d just lost my smile when I caught sight of the man coming in my direction. They bowed to our pack leader in a gesture of honor, but I stuck to my guns and lowered at him. “I like your smile. For a cranky lady, you have a cute smile.” I heard others faking a cough, and the others seemed to drop their jaws as they stared at him in amusement. The King of Wolves sure knows how to be cute. Shocking. “Knock it off!” I rolled my eyes and hurled the bow over his chest in a rude demeanor. I have never seen him use a bow and arrow before. I rarely see him use a weapon because first and foremost, he doesn’t need one because he is powerful and his physical strength is twice that of anyone else. He wasn’t called the Alpha King for nothing. “I want you to aim.” His eyebrows raised as he released a wicked grin. “What’s the catch?” My eyelids narrowed and with my arms crossed across my chest, I stared at him in incredulity. He dared to put me to even greater test? “Impress me…” He nodded, a playful smirk forming on his lips, and then estimated the target’s range. I’d say he’s in proper archery posture. Archery is more than just shooting the arrow to reach the target; it is also about building strength, and in order to learn the correct routine for your style, you must practice the stance, grip, and breathing, all of which he has done well so far. He positioned himself before aiming. The corner of my lips rose when he released the arrow and hit the center flawlessly. Not bad. He has done better than I expected. Despite my satisfaction with his performance, I managed to keep a poker face when he glanced at me, looking proud. “Well?” he asked and licked his lips. “Not bad…” I averted my gaze and walked away. “He’s hot! Now I know why he’s the Alpha King. He’s talented and smart. He’s a perfect fit for his position! Damian is too good to be true,” Leia boasted. I couldn’t agree more. He’s hot and sexy as hell, but like what I said, looks can be deceiving. I need to know him more, so I could decide whether to accept or reject him because honestly, I am not ready for another love to come into my life and cause me to go through the same pain I’ve gone through before. “You won’t reject him, right, Laura?” Her tone conveyed distress to me. I sat on the rock near the river I had just crossed. I looked away and forced a smile. “I don’t want to trust him…” “Why?” Leia questioned, befuddled. “You know my story, right? He’s the reason I am alone,” I bitterly said. “You know best that it was not his fault. That’s why you continue to protect him, not only because it’s your job and responsibility, but also because you want to.” “I don’t mix personal and professional matters. They are not the same.” It was the only reason. It is my duty to protect him, even if it means sacrificing thousands of lives in the process.
