The Dream

2180 Words
As the hours passed, Annika became so engrossed in her research that she lost track of time. It wasn't until the early hours of the morning that she finally decided to call it a night. She gathered her notes and placed them in her bag, ready for the following day's investigation. As she drifted off to sleep, Annika had a vivid dream about Kai. In Annika's dream, she and Kai were standing in a moonlit clearing, surrounded by towering trees. The air was filled with the scent of pine and damp earth, and the only sound was the gentle rustling of leaves. Annika and Kai were drawn together, their bodies pressed against each other. Their eyes, glowing ember-like in the moonlight, locked onto each other, a silent communication passing between them. His hands roamed over her chest, tracing the familiar contours, then up her neck, exploring every inch of her skin. Annika felt a surge of heat within her, a desire that she had never experienced before. As their passion intensified, they fell to the ground, their bodies entwined. Annika's clothes were torn away, revealing her naked form. Kai's hands traced the lines of her body, his touch gentle yet possessive. Annika's body arched against Kai's as they let out moans and heavy breaths of pleasure, their cries echoing through the forest. They lay entwined, their bodies bathed in moonlight. Annika felt a sense of peace and contentment she had never known before. Wrapped in the arms of this mysterious man who brought her peace and comfort, she felt truly alive. Annika woke quickly, her head darting up from her pillow, her heart pounding in her chest, beads of sweat dripping from her forehead. The dream had been so intense, so real, that it felt like she was still there, in Kai's arms. She closed her eyes and hugged herself to hold on to that feeling. She didn’t want it to fade away. Annika lay awake for a long time, replaying the dream in her mind. She had never experienced such intense desire before, and she couldn't shake the feeling that it was more than just a dream. As the morning sun climbs the sky, she notices the time and starts getting ready. As she puts on her clothes and her hand touches her skin, she starts to get flashes of her dream. Trying to shake the feeling so that she’s not distracted, she rushes to get dressed. She stops by her mirror to fluff and fix her hair and decides to apply a light touch of mascara and a soft red-tinted lip balm to her lips. Thinking it may be too much to be putting on make-up, she wipes off the tinted lip balm and instead applies an orange cream-scented chapstick. Walking down the sidewalk toward the library, she’s still getting flashbacks of her dream. She shakes her head as if to shake the thoughts out. She takes a deep breath and starts thinking about the Titian case and gains focus. As she approaches the building of the library, she can see Kai sitting on bench outside, waiting with coffee in hand. Kai sees her approaching and stands up, walking toward her. “You’re early.” She giggles and smiles. Kai looks at her with a wide smile as he hands her one of the coffees he promised. “I had a feeling you’d get here earlier, so I got an early start, too.” “I figured you were obsessing over this case and didn’t get any sleep last night, so I got you one with a couple of shots of espresso as well,” he says as he holds up the cup in his other hand to show her. Annika, surprised and flattered but concerned, looks at him and asks, “What about you? Where’s your coffee? You can’t make me drink these alone.” Kai raises his eyebrow and smirks. “Then you can share with me.” He lightly touches her arm and begins walking to the doors of the building. Annika follows, sipping her coffee. “Oh my God. This is amazing. Is that cinnamon?” Kai opens the door for Annika. “I told you, the best in the city, but with my own little touch, of course.” He gestures for her to enter the building first and gives her a wink. As they entered the building, Annika became overwhelmed with the layout, not knowing where to go. The library was a modern, multi-story building with sleek lines and floor-to-ceiling windows that offered stunning views of the city. The interior was bright and airy, with open-plan spaces and comfortable seating areas. The shelves were lined with a vast collection of books, organized logically and efficiently. The library's ground floor featured a café where patrons could enjoy coffee, tea, or light snacks while studying or socializing. The second floor housed the main reading room, with rows of individual study carrels and group study areas. The third floor was dedicated to specialized collections, such as business, law, and science. The library also offers a variety of technology services, including computer labs, Wi-Fi access, and digital media resources. The staff was friendly and helpful, always willing to assist patrons with their research needs. Overall, the library was a vibrant and inviting space that catered to the needs of the modern student and researcher. Annika turns to Kai. “Umm…I don’t even know where to go. I’ve never been in here before.” Kai looks at her with confusion. “Don’t you have to research your cases?” She looks down at her coffee and fidgets in embarrassment. “Yes, but I mainly use the library at our office.” “No worries. What’s first on your list?” He asks with intrigue. Annika shuffled through her bag, finding the list she had put together. She pulls it out and reads, “The history of Titian Industries.” “Got it,” Kai says and lightly grabs Annika’s hand, pulling her as he guides her through the library to the back, where they see an elevator. He pushes the button to go down. The elevator doors open. Kai enters the elevator while Annika is reluctant to step in. Kai holds out his hand. “You coming or are you just going to stand there?” he chuckles. As Annika and Kai descended the elevator, their anticipation grew. Annika had imagined a dusty, underground vault filled with leather-bound tomes. However, when the elevator doors opened, she was met with a modern, well-lit space filled with rows of computers. A look of disappointment crossed Annika's face, and Kai could see it. "I know what you were expecting," he said with a chuckle. "But the library stores everything digitally now. It's much safer in case of fires or flooding." Annika nodded, her disappointment fading as she and Kai found neighboring computers. They began to search for information on Titan Industries, their fingers flying across the keyboards. Their search yielded a wealth of documents, from financial records to internal memos. "These are all things that the firm already has in their discovery," Annika said with frustration. "We need something new, something that they don't know about." Kai continued to search, his eyes scanning the screen intently. Suddenly, he stopped and pointed at a series of files labeled "M.L.O." "Hey, there are some files on here labeled M.L.O. that I can't seem to access," he said with concern. Annika's heart skipped a beat. "M.L.O.? Are you sure? That could mean Moonlit Order!" she exclaimed, her excitement palpable. Kai nodded. "It's possible. We need to find a way to access those files." Annika let out a sigh of disappointment. "But how can we get access without the passwords? How do we find the passwords? Without this, I have nothing." Kai thought for a moment. "We could try to hack into the system," he suggested. "But that would be risky. If we're caught, we could get into serious trouble." Annika hesitated. She knew that hacking into the library's system was illegal and dangerous. But she was also determined to uncover the truth about the Moonlit Order. "We have to try something," she said finally. Just as they were about to give up, they heard a noise in another part of the room. Someone else was in there. Annika and Kai exchanged a glance, their curiosity piqued. Annika and Kai exchanged a glance, their curiosity piqued by the noise they had heard. They decided to investigate, their hearts pounding with anticipation and a hint of fear. As they approached the source of the sound, it was a door hidden in the back of the room. They heard muffled voices. They pressed their ears against the door, trying to make out what they were saying. "We can't let them get away with this, they’re getting too close," one voice said. "But what if they find out about us? Mr. Carter gave clear instructions just to keep an eye on her," another replied. "They won't find anything. We'll make sure of it." Annika and Kai shared a look of shock. It was clear that whoever was in there was discussing something important, something related to the Moonlit Order for sure. Without hesitation, Annika reached for the doorknob and turned it. The door creaked open, revealing a small, dimly lit room. Inside, they saw four men arguing, their faces obscured by shadows. The door let out a creak. "Hey! Who’s there?!" one of the men demanded, his voice filled with suspicion. Before Annika could say anything, Kai grabbed her by the hand, and they started running. Kai led her to the stairs, knowing the elevator would take too long. They ran up the stairs to the main floor of the library. Their footsteps echoed in the quiet halls. The men tried to chase them, but Annika and Kai were too fast for them. They burst out of the library, their hearts pounding in their chests. They had to get out of there before the men could raise the alarm. Annika and Kai ran as fast as they could, weaving through the city streets. They ran into the park where they first met. They were finally safe. As Annika and Kai caught their breath, they knew that the Moonlit Order was onto them. Their encounter in the library had exposed their presence, and they could expect retaliation. Annika leaned against a tree, trying to calm her racing heart. Kai approached her, his eyes filled with concern. He places his hands on her cheeks, trying to examine her. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice rough with exertion. Annika locked eyes with him, noticing that his eyes were glowing an eerie amber color. "I'm fine," she replied, her voice steady. "What's going on with your eyes, Kai?" Kai's hands slid off her cheeks as he turned away, taking deep breaths to calm himself. "It's a werewolf thing," he explained, his voice still a bit shaky. "Heightened adrenaline and fear can trigger your wolf self to start coming out. It's part of our bodies' natural defense." Annika giggled, trying to lighten the mood. "I didn't think you were scared of a bunch of old guys running after you. I mean, I'm pretty sure one of them broke a hip trying to run up those stairs." Kai turned to Annika, his eyes transitioning back to their gorgeous blue color. He approached her and caressed her cheeks with his hands again. "I wasn't scared of THEM, Annika," he said, his eyebrows furrowing with concern. "I was scared you were going to get hurt." Annika felt a warmth spread through her chest. Kai's concern for her safety touched her deeply. She knew that he would do anything to protect her, and that thought filled her with a sense of comfort and security. His hands dropped from her cheeks, and his arms crossed across his chest. Kai finally caught his breath and looked at Annika with a serious expression. "They know now we're onto them and exposed their presence. We need a safe place to go for tonight. They will most likely look to retaliate." Annika's heart pounded in her chest. She knew that Kai was right. The Moonlit Order would not take this lightly. They would do anything to protect their secrets and eliminate any threats to their power. "We can't go back to my apartment," Annika said. "They might be watching." Kai nodded. "We need to find somewhere off the grid, a place where they won't think to look." They discussed their options, brainstorming potential hiding places. Annika knew they couldn’t go to her parent’s house because it’s likely the Order would go looking there. Finally, Kai suggested a secluded cabin he knew about in the nearby woods. It was a remote location, far from any major roads or towns. "It's perfect," Annika said. "Let's go." Annika and Kai knew that their journey was far from over. The dangers they faced were only just beginning. But they were determined to stand together.
