At the Table

❀ Amy ❀ I arrived at the firm earlier than usual. Which was strange since it had been a mad rush to get going this morning. Still, it was nice to have a moment of quiet before the storm. But of course, the conference room had already been set up by the time I walked in, leather chairs pulled tight to the table, water bottles neatly placed, and a stack of documents waiting in front of each seat. The soft hum of the air conditioning was the only sound in the room, but it did little to ease the weight pressing against my chest. Today wasn’t about me. Today was about Karen. About her future. About fighting for her right to stand on her own after being blindsided by betrayal. I took a deep breath and pulled the folder closer, as I double-checked that everything I had prepped over the weekend.
