“So, Eva…” Darren said, and Eva glanced at him before she turned her attention back to the picture. “Your mother told me you are doing so good in school…how is it?” he asked.
“It’s ok,” Eva responded. I wanted to push her, to give her father a proper response, but Darren seemed ok with it.
“Just ok? What about your friends? Are they nice?”
“They are,” she confirmed as she continued to work on the picture. Moments later, Suzy returned with our drinks. Emma and Clark struck up a conversation over National Valley while Darren continued to try to engage with Eva. She wasn’t all that responsive, and I knew he was disappointed.
