Emma
I walked in immediately. My foster parents looked frightened to see me.
“I forgot my phone”
“Oh” they said synchronously . I saw the relief look on their faces. They thought I didn’t hear their conversation. I picked up my phone from the tv console and left the cinema room. It felt strange that they didn’t ask if I was feeling any better, like they knew what was happening to me. I slowly lifted the black pendant resting against my chest , it felt like there was a message written on the pendant . I rushed to my room and quietly sat on the floor because Ava was fast asleep. I walked over to my computer and began my research on the pendant, and I couldn’t find anything. The necklace must have existed even before artificial intelligence existed. If there was one thing I hated; it was my curiosity. Once a question found its way into my head, it refused to leave until I had an answer.
I laid on my bed and used my duvet to cover my head to toe. I looked at Ava sleeping peacefully. Lucky her. I couldn’t stop thinking about what happened. From the cut, to Raymond’s strange aura, to Mr Logan’s reaction when Ava told him about Raymond , to these questions. I felt restless, I tossed and turned beneath my duvet. I squeezed my eyes and all I could see was the memory of my glowing eyes. My mum walked into my room and gave me a kiss on my forehead. I blinked a little. I think she didn’t notice.
“I love you so much" she whispered before quietly leaving the room. I turned and stared at the ceiling once she was gone. The night went by in a blur.
The sweet aroma of pancakes and syrup coming from the kitchen woke me up the following morning. I checked the clock, it was 6 AM. Finally, it’s Tuesday.Ava was still asleep. Sighing, I dragged myself downstairs to the kitchen. I quietly walked into my parents, my dad was on his laptop on the counter while my mum was with one of the staff helping her arrange our lunch box for school. I could tell they were ignoring me cause they noticed everything and they could tell I walked into the kitchen.
“Good morning mum and dad” I said as I walked over to the espresso machine and poured myself a cup of coffee.
“Good morning darling” they greeted without enthusiasm. I took a seat , I sipped my cup of coffee looking at the both of them at once.I needed answers to my questions, so their low energy was never going to stop me. I continued to sip my coffee .
“The necklace dad wore around my neck , stopped whatever was in control of me. Why was that and who did it belong to?” I asked with so much seriousness.
“Family” my dad responded after a long pause . I noticed his lips were shaking. Whatever he was doing on his computer wasn’t so important. That, I knew.
“You’re good now and that’s all that matters” my mum replied like she was trying to dodge my question.
“No! I keep hearing voices from far away , all at once. A voice inside me keeps speaking to me, the new boy in my school acts like he knows me and Mr Logan wouldn’t tell me why he was afraid when he heard Raymond’s name”.
“Family is not an answer, I need an answer”. They weren’t going to answer, I knew that for sure . They looked at me with pity in their eyes and my mum told me “We only want the best for you , when the time is right we’ll tell you”
“When’s the right time” Ava asked. Neither of them responded. The silence told me that they were definitely hiding something.I figured this was not the right time to discuss this.
