WHO IS SHE?

“What is he doing here?” I muttered

I lost my appetite instantly . Outside the cafeteria window close to my table, a dark figure stood between the trees. It was my older brother, Steven.

My heart jumped into my throat . Of all place he could have showed up. Why my school?. “ This young man enjoys stepping on my toes, he always wants to be wherever i’m at”. I whispered.

While covering up my pasta salad. I quickly observed the cafeteria to see if anyone noticed him. Students continued eating, talking and laughing. A few people were scrolling through their phones and some of them couldn’t take their eyes off me. At least, nobody was looking outside.

Nobody except Emma. My eyes landed on her immediately. She was staring directly at the window. Directly at Steven.I saw confusion in her eyes. Her brows were furrowed and her eyes were squinted, as if she was trying to figure out what she was seeing .

A strange feeling settled in my stomach. No human should be able to see Steven now. He’s not wearing his necklace. No one should be able to notice him. Yet Emma couldn’t seem to take her eyes off Steven.

Steven texted “I know you can see me,come outside”. I sighed and stood up. I made my way out of the cafeteria. The moment I stepped out of the school building , Steven grabbed my wrist and pulled me to the spot where he stood.

“What are you doing here?” I asked .

“I missed you and I was bored at home, that’s what” he replied with a smirk. He looked through the cafeteria window opposite to Emma and her friend group.

“Who’s she?” He asked.

“Steven, it’s my first day here. How do you expect me to reply to your question” I responded.

“What’s her name?” He asked with a mean tone.

“Emma”

“I think she can see me” Steven said with confusion in his eyes. A memory flashed in my head. Earlier today, during history class , I had felt something strange, I felt Emma’s presence in my head , it felt as though Emma had heard my thought. I couldn’t swallow my saliva after I analyzed the morning experience.

Emma was still looking across the window. He raised his right hand and waved at Emma. She blinked. For a moment, neither of us said a word. The soothing wind blew across my black with purple collar striped blazer. Steven looked more serious than usual . It was concerning. I knew something was wrong. I and Steven moved away from her sight.

“No human should be able to see me” he questioned himself while he paced between the trees. Steven ran his right hand through his hair.

“How?”

“How is this possible?”

“Humans can’t see me when I’m not wearing my necklace”

“Maybe she’s different”. He looks at me.

“Yes”

“I need you to discover who she truly is” Steven orders me while his two hands were on my elbow . He looked worried, he looked impatient. I released myself from his grip.

“And if don’t?” I asked

“You will”. Before I could respond, he disappeared into thin air. My jaw is clenched shut from what had just happened and my heart felt like it was about to give out. Steven last words echoed in my head. As I rolled my eyes, I shoved my hands into my pockets as I made my way back into the school building. The final bell rang and all the students began filing out of the cafeteria into the hallway , leaving slowly to their various sport practices and clubs.

I didn’t know what sport to participate in, till I heard Ava and Emma’s conversation from three feet away . They were talking about cheerleading and swimming practice, that was when I knew the sport I was going for. I made my way into the American football changing room and I saw the captain of the team, Andre. Tall, blonde and very fit . I asked him if I could still make it to the main team and his response definitely made me feel like I was a threat. I changed into the school’s football uniform fastening my helmet and shoulder pads . The coach came in and addressed the rookies attending their first practice in the locker room and told us not to ever relent cause there is competition amongst players. He blew his blue whistle and we made our way to the field shouting and hyping each other up.

Coach Chandler split the team into starters and backups. The rookies were told to wait on the sidelines while the first string offense took the field. As I made my way to the bench , I saw Emma at the front roll of cheerleading practice and I giggled cause she was making tons of mistakes . Ava was the captain, hence to why everyone ignored the fact that she was making mistakes . She turned and caught me staring but I couldn’t look away, she waved at me with a bright smile and i reciprocated frighteningly .

Coach Chandler blew the whistle. He replaced five first choice players with the five rookies on the bench .We all jogged our way to the field. Andre tossed the brown football to me. I caught it with confidence cause I knew what I got in me . I sprinted past two defenders , leaped into the air and passed the footbal to Corbin. Coach Chandler blew the whistle again.

“Hold up, did everyone see that?” He shouted. They sluggishly nodded. I could hear the cheerleading squad applauding me. I smiled.

“What’s your name again?” He asked

“Raymond” I said. He called Andre and told both of us that we would make a great team together. Andre rolled his eyes.

“Chill out bro” I said jokingly. He gave me a death stare. Coach blew the whistle. Sport practice was over and I could feel girls coming to meet me. I turned and it was Ava and Emma. They were so excited to see me.

“You were amazing on the field” Ava said as she brought her right hand to shake me .

“Thank you” I replied. Emma smiled at me .

“Are you heading home now” I asked both of them

“Yes, Emma’s driver must be waiting at the park. We need to pack our things and start going” Ava replied quickly.

“Okay then, I’ll be waiting for my driver to arrive but we can go and pack our things together” I said

“Most definitely” Emma agreed

We made our way to the car park after we packed our bags , as I stood at the waiting area to watch them enter the car . The driver’s seat window rolled down and I didn’t expect to see that man. He looked at me with fear in his eyes . I watched him drive away as they waved goodbye.

I couldn’t believe what I just saw.
