The police garage on Melbourne Street is where the various police vehicles, Wolseley squad cars, Bedford Black Marias, several unmarked cars including an Austin A40 Somerset, a Morris Minor and 2 Ford Consuls together with the larger saloons used by senior officers when on official visits, are fuelled, serviced and repaired.
It is also where the mud-smeared burnt out Humber Snipe recovered from Jacob Handscomb’s farm was brought to be forensically examined by the experts who had come down from the Forensic Science Services in Wetherby.
Two forensic technicians in brown cotton laboratory coats together with Ron Berkeley, the chief mechanic at the garage, were systematically taking the car apart in the search for clues.
