The day was quiet, only a few shoppers out on the street, mostly housewives come to town to shop for bargains in the Garside Market, eking out the last of the week’s housekeeping money before payday. Payday was tomorrow afternoon, Friday, and the hope was that their husbands would bring their pay packets home before heading to the pub. Many a week’s wages found their way on a Friday or Saturday night into the tills of the ‘Black Bear’, the ‘Turks Head’, the ‘Queens Arms’ or the Working Man’s Institute and wives and kids might well go hungry the following week.
