The black Austin FX3 hearse slowly pulled away from the West Garside Co-operative Society funeral home, made its way along Sheffield Road and up to number 17 Albert Street, the home of Rosie Palmer. The Palmer family, Jack and Ethel and the surviving children came out from the house and lined up behind the cortege, to be followed by all their neighbours. The procession slowly made its way back down the street and headed towards St Vincent’s Catholic Church. All along the route the townspeople stood in silent tribute to the dead girl. Men lifted their hats and slightly bowed their heads as the sad cortege passed and women wiped away their tears.
