📄 CHAPTER 24
As they spent more time together, the walls that had once separated them slowly began to come down. Liana learned that beneath Jaxson’s wild, rebellious exterior lay a deep sense of loyalty and a fierce desire to protect those who could not protect themselves. His reputation for breaking rules came not from a wish to cause trouble, but from a refusal to follow orders that were unfair or harmful.
She also began to understand Serena better. Her coldness and sharp words were not born from cruelty, but from caution. She had learned early that revealing too much could lead to fear or misunderstanding, and so she had built a shield around herself. But as she saw that Liana respected their secret and took their duty seriously, she became less guarded, offering quiet advice and observations that were often very insightful.
Even Elias, who had always been so careful and reserved, began to let his guard down. He spoke more freely about his family, about the history of the Guardians, and about the weight of the responsibility that had rested on his shoulders from a young age. He admitted that it was often lonely, carrying knowledge that others could not share, and that having someone new who was willing to learn felt like a relief.
“You are very different from what I expected,” Elias told her one evening as they walked home together. “Most people, when they learn the truth, are either afraid or greedy. You have been curious, but respectful. That is a rare thing.”
Liana smiled. “I think it is only fair. If something is this important, it deserves to be treated with care.”
