đź“„ CHAPTER 9
He gestured for her to walk beside him, and together they began to move forward. Wherever Elias stepped, the mist stayed thin and the shadows remained normal, as if his presence alone was enough to keep the strange darkness at bay. Liana stayed close, feeling safer than she had moments before, though she still had so many questions swirling in her mind.
“You knew this would happen?” she asked after a moment, glancing up at him. “You knew something like this was waiting here?”
Elias walked slowly, his hands resting loosely at his sides. “I knew it was possible,” he answered honestly. “The barrier between our world and the one beyond is not as strong as it used to be. Sometimes, when the weather changes or the light fades, things that should stay hidden find their way through. Shadows become more than just darkness, and the air feels heavier.”
He paused, looking ahead toward the familiar streetlights that were beginning to glow in the distance. “Most people walk right through it without noticing — their minds tell them it is just fog, or tiredness, or the wind. But some people can see it clearly. You are one of those people, Liana.”
His words made her think. She had always been the type to notice small details, to feel things others ignored, but she had never imagined it meant something like this. “And you?” she asked softly. “Can you always see it?”
Elias gave a small nod. “I was born with the ability. My family has always been able to feel the flow of magic and the changes in the Veil. It is both a gift and a responsibility.”
